When we gather, we grow. 🤝
One of the most powerful parts of REDS awareness is the community behind it — the dietitians, physicians, athletic trainers, coaches, mental health providers, and performance professionals who care deeply about athlete well-being.
None of us can address REDS alone.
It takes shared insight.
Shared experience.
Shared commitment.
This week, we’re celebrating the collective effort of REDS-informed providers who are educating, advocating, and transforming athlete care across every level of sport.
If you’re part of this movement, whether through your clinic, your team, your research, or your conversations, thank you.
Together, we are building stronger systems of care and creating a better future for athletes everywhere.
Tag a provider below who deserves a shout out for their role in athlete care! 👇

As I sit her sipping a good cup of coffee snuggled with the dog Mason that I realize I need to pause to give thanks.
The last few years have been tough being pulled in many directions however not praying for the alternative.
However as a result of this I find my temper shorter, irritated at things I would have let go and an insecurity that as a result of this I am not giving enough.
However I then realize that I am not in control. No matter how much I try I am not and the only thing I can do is decide what to do in this present moment.
I hope this holiday season you take a moment to just do nothing!

Today's thought leader is not one that is as common as others but his work really shaped my practice.. Dr. Jack Raglin
He was a leading researcher in what is now called Overtraining Syndrome but he had viewed it as Staleness in Sport.
He studies swimmers and when allowing taper before conference he was able to demonstrate to coaches that the group that tapered and did not do as many two a days actually performed better.
It was from this work that he explored the nervous system impact when the brain and body begin to not recover. He then used this knowledge within military.
As a brain becomes underfueled and underrecovered we lose the energy to create a mood which leads to staleness but can also lead to an overstimulated brain in which you become wired but tired.
From this work I developed a questionnaire that has been a great tool to catch these symptoms before they progress.

“3 signs your athlete might be facing REDS.”

Could your athlete be facing REDS (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport)?
Here are 3 key signs that often go unnoticed:
1️⃣ Persistent fatigue or performance decline — training feels harder, recovery feels slower.
2️⃣ Recurrent injuries or illness — especially stress fractures, low immunity, or frequent overuse injuries.
3️⃣ Hormonal or metabolic changes — irregular cycles, disrupted sleep, or slowed growth/recovery.
REDS isn’t a “nutrition issue”... it’s a systemic energy imbalance that requires an interdisciplinary lens.
The earlier we recognize the signs, the quicker we can restore both health and performance.

If you have taken the REDs Informed Provider course you have heard this book referenced repeatedly.
As a dietitian we are taught to look for signs of malnutrition secondary to nutrition changes however in the world of sport we tend to treat these symptoms as “unicorns”.
Malnutrition is malnutrition and this book is a beautiful reference to understand better how the body is trying to speak to you.
Dr. G also equips the clinician with a how -to with treatment of these symptoms such as GI dysfunction, abnormal bloodwork.
And as always has a way of empowering others that there is no level of “sick enough” to be worthy of treatment.
This should be on the bookshelf of anyone and everyone!

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When we gather as professionals, we grow in our knowledge, confidence, and athlete care. 🌿
From dietitians and doctors to coaches to physical therapists and trainers, each role matters. Collaboration is how awareness turns into change.

Thursday this month are devoted to thoughtful leaders who have paved the road for athletes physical & mental health.
Dr. Ron Thompson and Dr. Roberta Sherman were the first to focus on the unique situations and environments are athletes face.
From coaches to uniforms to body image they challenged the status quo. They also were the first to partner with an eating disorder facility to create an athlete specific track.
When I first entered into this work I was star struck but Ron could not have been a more humble person.
As my career developed I had the pleasure of being on a panel with him in which he sent me a personal email motivating me to stay hungry ( not literally) and to keep being the pitbull that our athletes need.
Sport would not be the place it is today without Ron & Roberta.

At the REDS-informed table, dietitians play a vital role in helping athletes rebuild energy balance. 💪
From identifying low energy availability to guiding sustainable fueling strategies, performance dietitians are often the first to spot the subtle signs of REDS.
Here’s some signs to look for:
👉 Recurrent fatigue, soreness, or injury
👉 Menstrual or hormonal changes
👉 GI issues
👉 Sleep disruption and trouble focusing
👉 Decreased training capacity despite effort
👉 Lowered heart rate
Nutrition is the bridge between awareness and recovery, and it starts with conversations led by REDS-informed providers.

Tuesdays are for sharing tools of the trade to keep you fed and avoid the RED.
A few years back I had an adolescent athletew who was trying to increase her nutrition as she had gotten into the energy “hole” during season.
At her next appointment she shared how when she tried to look up recipes they were all geared towards weight loss and were low carb. The exact opposite of what she needed. She even screenshot the ads that popped up when exploring.
Today I want to share these 3 cookbooks that are my go to recommendations for athlete.
They are nourishing not only from their nutrient profile but as you can see focused on connection around the table ( the theme for REDs awareness) , convenient for on the go but also focused on making sure the athlete eats enough.
Be sure to check these out!

It’s here… our month-long celebration of Global REDS Awareness Month! ✊
This week, we’re exploring the powerful collaboration between clinicians, coaches, and researchers who work together to identify and support athletes facing Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDS). Just like we gather round the table at Thanksgiving to reflect on all that the we have due to community & others.
REDS is complex.
That’s why it takes a table full of gifted professionals, each bringing unique expertise to athlete health, performance, and recovery.
Throughout November, we’ll share stories, education, and insights from REDS-informed providers who are changing the way we approach energy balance and athlete care.

Let us know your role on the athlete care team in the comments below! ⬇️

See even in the Bible there was an understanding that become a command to rest...
God honors hard work and it is a part of the Lord's work but so is rest.
