There are three approaches to healing:
⬇️ Top-Down- talking, using cognitive techniques
⬆️ Bottom-Up - somatic approach, using the body to heal
➡️ Sideways- Mindfulness, meditation
These are simplified definitions. Each one approaches and affects the nervous system in a different way. No one way is better, but most modalities focus on the Top-Down approach and neglect using the body. Trauma gets stored in the body, into our entire nervous system and often hidden from our cognitive abilities. So top-down is only partially effective.
Involving the body and being aware of the body-mind, allows us to use our entire neurobiology. We can process emotions, move energy, identify sub personalities, and make the unconscious conscious.
The coaching methodology I have been practicing involves all three approaches. Transformation doesn’t happen unless our three brains are in coherence. Our limbic system emotional brain, primal/reptilian sensing brain, and cognitive thinking brain all need to communicate with each other.
This is why often we say we want something, for example to save money. We write it down, say affirmations, and declare the exact amount we need to save. Then, after a stressful day and scrolling on Instagram, we find ourselves impulse shopping. This happens because while our thinking mind was in agreement to this desire, our Limbic and Primal brains had a deeper commitment to the way impulse shopping feels.
In these coaching techniques, we go deeper, past the default system and make conscious what is holding us back from what we desire. We then integrate those parts and give them a new function, while giving ourselves permission to make choices that are in alignment with our desire.
Are you ready to bring the body-mind alive? Use pleasure to heal and integrate? And find more satisfaction and sacredness in the richness and depth of life?
