The Art Studio has become a creative haven—where experiences are shared, talents are discovered, and community is built.

Cecilia Rice finds inspiration in nature and memory, recently sharing her work and the stories behind each piece in a gallery display. Jewelry maker Ron Ottens brings decades of skill to the Studio, teaching classes and encouraging others to keep learning. Ruth Shroyer pours her energy into painting projects that support Village events and brighten the space daily. And Bill Boucher, who picked up watercolor painting later in life, reminds us all that it’s never too late to try something new.

These residents prove that the Art Studio isn’t just about creating—it’s about connecting, contributing, and continuing to grow.

Attendees of Saturday night's annual John Knox Village Foundation Gala will have the chance to bid on many great items during the silent and live auctions. This includes a one-of-a-kind, electric guitar built by 97-year-old Village resident George Weeks.

George has built a few dozen guitars and string instruments as a hobby for the last 50 years. He decided to donate his last creation to the Foundation, which is using the money raised from the Gala to make interior enhancements at The Pavilion.

This week, MyKC Live on KCTV5 did a feature on George and his donated guitar.

More than 16 months since construction began, the Courtyards E Building officially opened on Monday! Trucks arrived to help the first new residents move into their apartment homes. The $15-million, four-story complex features 52 beautifully appointed one- and two-bedroom apartment homes, all of which were sold prior to opening day.

We welcome all the new John Knox Village residents moving into E Building over the next several months!

Redevelopment at the Village isn’t just about buildings—it’s about creating a beautiful, welcoming environment for everyone who lives and visits here.

Led by Landscaping Manager Dave Craver, our team has been hard at work refreshing entrances, planting colorful blooms, and expanding green spaces. From vibrant new flower beds to improved irrigation and future wind sculptures, every detail adds to the charm of our community.

And while planting is important, maintaining 200 acres of grass through the summer is no small task—just ask Dave, who’s been keeping the Village green for 19 years.

It’s all part of making sure the Village always feels like home.

Constuction is progressing on the new Daniel D. Rexroth Recreation Center, being built on the site of the former Sun Valley Clubhouse.

We took aerial drone footage earlier this week that shows the steel framing installed on the 3,600-square-foot multipurpose recreation area, which will feature two indoor pickleball courts. When not used for pickleball, Village residents will also be able to use the area for basketball, ping-pong and fitness classes.

The footage also offers a nice view of the new outdoor pool. With nearly 1,600 square feet of surface water, the pool will be double the size of the one at the old clubhouse.

The center includes a 1,120-square-foot community room with fireplace, soft seating, tables and chairs, and a full kitchen with island seating, ideal for neighborhood and family gatherings.

September 2025 construction update for the Daniel D. Rexroth Recreation Center.

The Art Studio has quietly become one of the most meaningful spaces at the Village—a place where talent, friendship, and creativity come to life. Whether it’s painting, jewelry-making, or trying something entirely new, residents are discovering that it’s never too late to create, connect, and contribute.

Jan Malott, a retired art teacher of 35+ years, is helping fellow residents tap into their creative side. From beginner drawing to watercolor, Jan’s classes are welcoming and fun.
