Please don't confuse our silence with compliance.
We've sat with the immigrant mother, scared for her and her child's life. We've heard the horror stories of what happens with coyotes when mothers flee with their children to safety. We've heard how they had to choose between death and violence in their home country, encountering kidnapping and s*xual assault along the route to the US, for a slim chance at a peaceful and safe life. We've heard it, we've felt their fears, and we know we would do the exact same thing if it meant us getting our children to safety.
We've sat with the woman who was s*exually assaulted by a man in a position of power, who experienced blackmail when she brought it to the people meant to keep these things from happening. We've heard the stories of how police officers told them, "if you report this, it'll ruin his life" with zero regard of how he already tainted hers.
We've sat with women who conceived by SA, deeply worried about their ability to care for a child that is a product of r**e, who has no access to termination of the pregnancy because of politics.
We've sat with people who have been spiritually abused by religious institutions that fail to protect them while influencing laws, despite this country being founded on separation of church and state.
We've sat with the trans person who is terrified of being bounty hunted for using the bathroom they feel safest in. The trans person who now can't drive in Kansas.
The systems are broken and are being kept that way by people in positions of power.
We will keep walking alongside and advocating for the oppressed, the traumatized, the people who have been treated as lesser humans because of things they can't control. We'll keep voting. We'll stay informed.
We will protect you to the absolute best of our ability while our hearts break alongside yours.
