September marks NICU Awareness Month, and we’re honoring the strength of our most fragile newborns and the expert, compassionate teams who care for them.

Aurora Borchers was born on November 4, 2023, with a bilateral cleft palate and a hemangioma, conditions that went undetected during pregnancy. Her NICU stay was filled with uncertainty but also with many meaningful connections.

For many patients with blood cancer and other life-threatening illnesses, a blood stem cell transplant – made possible by lifesaving donations – is the best option for survival. According to the .S. Health Resources and Services Administration, 70% of patients who need a blood stem cell transplant don't have a fully matched donor in their family, leading them to rely on the NMDP.

As part of HCA Healthcare, we’re proud to share that the HCA Healthcare Foundation will continue their collaboration with the American Heart Association on their Getting to the Heart of Stroke™ initiative through $3.9 million in funding and support. Together, the American Heart Association, HCA Healthcare and the HCA Healthcare Foundation are working to foster cardiovascular health, prevent stroke and improve patient outcomes by increasing cardiology and neurology collaboration, deploying evidence-based education and interventions, and identifying and minimizing health disparities.

🤝 With support from the HCA Healthcare Foundation, Getting to the Heart of Stroke™ has reached over 200 million individuals with evidence-informed education on AFib and stroke risk, while expanding outreach to more than 160 community organizations, including clinics, schools, food pantries and libraries, and implementing intervention programs focused on controlling blood pressure, improving nutrition security and maternal health.

According to Blood Cancer United, about every three minutes, someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma – the most common types of blood cancer. Blood cancer is caused by DNA mutations within blood cells. In most cases, this is linked to factors beyond our control, like age, ethnicity and family history. This Blood Cancer Awareness Month, we’re answering common questions by sharing the facts shown here.

Through these programs, over 1,000 acute leukemia patients receive treatment each year. For some blood cancers, the only potential cure is a blood and marrow transplant. Labor Day weekend is a time for barbecues, pool parties and outdoor fun, but it also marks one of the busiest periods for emergency rooms. While many holiday mishaps can be treated at home some situations require immediate medical attention.

-Seek emergency care right away if you or a loved one experiences any of the following:
-Severe chest pain or difficulty breathing
-A head injury accompanied by confusion, vomiting or loss of consciousness
-Signs of heatstroke, such as a high fever, confusion or fainting
-Deep cuts or wounds that won’t stop bleeding
-Severe abdominal pain or persistent vomiting
-Sudden weakness, numbness or difficulty speaking (possible stroke)

Lee's Summit Medical Center Chief Executive Officer, Gabe Clements, spent time with Julina Steele and Grace Smedly on our MedSurg unit as part of a Walk in Your World exercise. Gabe stated, "I immediately noticed the impact that both Julina and Grace have on patients, family, colleagues and physicians on the unit. Both demonstrated a strong commitment to providing high quality and unparalleled patient experience to their patients. They live out our mission, vision and values in all their interactions and welcomed me, educated me and answered my questions while inspiring and reminding me of why I do what I do every day."

Walk in Your World is a learning activity that helps connect our senior leaders with colleagues by creating an open space for the employee to share thoughts and ideas. It helps leaders gain a better understanding of what each person on the team is experiencing while performing their work. Through these revelations, we are able to gain insight on how to support each other.
