Most people are over-braced… and under-organized.

If your only cues are
“engage.” “activate.” “stabilize.” “squeeze.”
you’re probably teaching people to fight gravity instead of work with it.

Those words create:
• global tension
• superficial muscle dominance
• early compression
• blocked expansion
• poor timing

They make the body rigid before it has a chance to absorb force.

Movement isn’t about turning muscles on or making them stronger.
It’s about managing pressure, redirecting momentum, and most importantly giving the body time to do all of this.

That’s why I use cues like:

Soften.
Let the tissues deform before they stiffen.

Get heavy.
Feel the heel. Feel the sit bone. Let gravity win first.

Settle.
Allow pressure to organize before you try to produce force.

Widen.
Create space so force has somewhere to go.

When someone “squeezes,” they often create compression without containment.
When someone “gets heavy,” they create yield before stiffness.

And stiffness that follows yield is usable.
Stiffness that precedes yield is compensation.

If you can’t absorb force, you’ll just brace harder.
If you can’t manage pressure, you’ll just squeeze more.

Strength isn’t about how hard you contract.
It’s how well you can accept load and redirect it.

Try this in your next workout:

Instead of “brace your core”…think “let your ribs soften and feel your heel get heavy.”

Watch what changes.

Most view internal and external rotation as opposites.

They are only opposites if you freeze time.

When taking passive ROM you’re looking at a snapshot in time. But movement respects both space and time.

ER and IR are both always present. At certain times you’ll see a certain bias but that’s doesn’t mean one is absent.

ER and IR are just different points on the same continuos loop of energy much like a Mobius strip. IR is an internal resistance to the ER moment created by GRF.

TIME LINKS THEM TOGETHER.

You don’t create ER you stop holding onto IR and allow ER be expressed. When ER occurs depends on structure, geometry, connective tissue behavior, rate, sequence, timing, etc.

The goal to improving movement is holding onto IR torque, create a delay, to slow forward momentum and give yourself time to get to the other side.

An inability to efficiently create pressure, hold IR, etc. leads to compensatory containment strategy to halt the forward advancement of the COM. Anterior pelvic tilt, low back compression, thoracic over-rotation, flat feet, bunions, knee valgus…the are all strategies that appear when the system can’t create and manage pressure with respect to time.

3 Things You Can Try On Leg Day to Help Take Pressure Off Your Lower Back

Move Weight in Front:
- keeping weight in front of the body forces the COM backwards which gives you more space to descend into a squat
- remember to reach keep the weight close but reach the elbows forward to get into a better position

Perform Unweighting Exercises:
- exercises like TRX squats, band assisted squats, and chops can help to slow down the rate at which you push into the ground. This can help to elongate the lower back and take pressure off

Add Mobility Exercises:
- when performing a symmetrical activity like a back squat you need to produce a lot of pressure within the body
- an increase in pressure takes away relative motion and makes things more stiff so you can lift heavy
- adding in exercises that help to regain relative motion can help reduce pressure between sets

Orientation vs. True Layback

There is no good or bad when talking about performance. You can still throw a baseball ridiculously hard with an orientation.

But when looking at efficiency…creating orientation is costly to the system due to concentric muscle activity. Connective tissues are much better at creating velocity and whip.

Thanks to and for inspiring a cool little mobilization to gain a little bit more “true layback”.

If you’re struggling with movement or pain or simply have questions feel free to reach out.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT ‼️

After thoughtful consideration with my wife over the last year, we have made the difficult decision to move to Kansas City, Missouri, at the beginning of 2024. I have accepted a job there, and my wife, Kailee, will be pursuing her law degree.

I want you all to know how thankful I am for you. Whether I treated you just once or you had regular visits, please know how grateful I am for the opportunity you have provided me to grow and learn. You all had a part in teaching me how to become a better doctor and person. Without the trust you placed in me by walking into my office, I would not be where I am today.

My final week in the office will be the first week of January. If you would like to come in for an appointment before I leave, please reach out. I would love to see and say goodbye to as many of my patients as possible.

I will always be here for you should you ever need me. I have the ability to see patients virtually, should you ever want to pursue that option, and I am going to refer anyone who wants a recommendation to two very capable doctors, both of whom have been mentors to me. I am leaving secure in the knowledge that you will be in excellent hands.

Thank you again for being an integral part of my journey. I am grateful for the trust and support you have shown my throughout the years.

Sincerely,

Dr. Ryan Crandall.
