On the final day of this year's Black History Month we are honoring the memory of a leader who made an incredible impact at Inova.
Leon, is a Greek name, derived from the word lion and given as a nickname for a fierce or brave warrior. History will tell you of Leon, the great king of Sparta or Leon, the Greek giant, but we want to share a memory of Leon Ransome our very own proud, powerful, and incomparable lion.
Leon was a team member for nearly 3 years and served as Inova's first Diversity & Inclusion Manager and Team Member Resource Group (TMRG) champion at Inova. The Black Leader Advisory Council (BLAC) TMRG and all TMRGs are a result of Leon's passion and commitment to diversity and inclusion. The BLAC TMRG is proud to close out Black History Month by highlighting the man who inspired us all to roar… like a lion.

On the final day of this year's Black History Month we are recognizing Randy, one of our distinguished team members.
Randy has been an Inova team member for 42 years. He started as a support services coordinator and is now a senior orthopedic technician.
Randy pioneered Black History Month at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital (IMVH), in the 1990's Randy brought together a group of colleagues to discuss how to recognize Black History Month at IMVH. Together, they started grass roots program that included a potluck and provided an opportunity for team members to share and celebrate Black History. The first event took place at IMVH cafeteria, but the celebration has continued to grow year over year.
Randy has brought on multiple notable keynote speakers to IMVH to share their experiences and accomplishments, including Dr. Cleve Francis, MD, Dr. Alquietta Brown, Roberta Tinch, Dr. Samantha Benjamin-Allen, DO, the late Dr. Barney Barnwell and Jimmi Barnwell, and Dr. George Branch, MD. Some of the musical entertainment over the years include Dr. Corey Wallach, Vinnie Johnson and Dr. Daniel Ampomah!
Randy shared with us he is so proud of the evolution of Black History Month at IMVH and the support he has received from leaders and colleagues. Around 300 team members attend the celebration to learn about Black history, share in the wonderful food and enjoy the company of their colleagues.
Randy’s commitment to diversity extends to facilitating and encouraging team members to celebrate their cultures and traditions. This includes Filipino recognition day, International recognition celebration, Native American History Month and Eid Festival.
Randy also dedicates time to our community's youth athletes as a high school basketball coach and he participates in and encourages basketball and volleyball games to foster comradery with Inova team members, which has also built connections in the community. IMVH team members have played volleyball with Mount Vernon High School volleyball players.
Randy gives back to the community by giving orthopedic presentations to local high schools. He was awareded the 1999 Oxon Hill Boys and Girls Club man of the year in part to the work he does for young people in our community.
Randy's colleagues shared with us he is wonderful father, grandfather and friend - a loyal friend, dedicated family man and loves the beach life.
