The first screening test is for tuberculosis. This is to make sure that any one residing in the US does not have latent or active TB. The TST is a skin test that you can get done - on the forearm- and need to return to the doctor to have it read in 48-72 hours. If the induration is less than 4mm, then it is considered negative. The T-spot and Quantiferon gold test are blood tests, and more specific than the skin test. CXR is required if you have a positive result on any of the tests to make sure that you don’t have active infection. If you have a positive CXR or are symptomatic, you will be referred to the health department for proper treatment. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out at 571-206-4774.

For those picky eaters, there is the option to give the balanced vitamins and minerals in a soluble tab rather than the sugary gummy chewable! No sugar, better tasting. Worth a try to get the right amount of iron, b complex and vit d into a growing child.

National Walking Day! Let a walk boost your immune system, overall health, and weight loss. Even a 10 minute brisk walk everyday is heart healthy- anywhere, anytime. If you want to do it at the comfort of your home, I personally love doing "WALK" by Leslie Sansone on Youtube; or you can do any program that you love!

To appreciate the outdoors, we are in DC for the Cherry Blossoms. We did our 10,000 steps that day, unknowingly! Beautiful day, wonderful times :)

April is Autism Acceptance Month! 1 in 60 child is diagnosed with autism. Thus, screening is very important in identifying at risk children so that they receive the proper diagnosis and treatment.

If you have a child between the ages of 2months old to 5years old, and are wondering about their developmental milestones, then you can fill out the ASQ form (ages and stage questionnaire). Another screening form for autism is the MCHAT - done specifically at 9mo, 18mo, and 24mo or 30mo of age.

Dialysis is a life saving option for many children, but it does take a toll on the children and their families. I have seen it firsthand how they must deal with dialysis and how it affects their school, development, social skills and growth. They must be vigilant about their fluid intake, food restriction of sodium/potassium/phosphorus intake, along with taking various medications so that their iron levels are up, acid/base and electrolytes are in balance, blood pressure is close to normal, and they continue to have linear growth, amongst so many other issues.

While at Univ of Florida, in Gainesville, FL, I had the opportunity to take care of many children on dialysis. These children are very vibrant and strong-willed, who struggle everyday for a "normal" life. While at UF, I had the opportunity to take care of Andy. He had come to the pediatric ICU in heart failure and required intensive care and therapy. He required ECMO (artifical heart/lung machine) and dialysis for over 1 year!! He was in the ICU for almost 2 years, and with the care of many doctors, nurses and therapists, he was able to leave the hospital and be with his family! However, during that time, Andy had to receive a heart transplant since his heart never recovered. Even though he had the heart transplant, his kidneys were damaged to the point of no return. He continues on dialysis today, 3 times a week, for about 3-4 hours.

To get off dialysis and have any resemblance of normal childhood life, his only option is to have a kidney transplant. However, kidney transplant is a very expensive procedure and difficult process. His family has set up a GoFundMe page: https://gofund.me/71e3bf43
