Now is the time to protect yourself against spring allergies

When it starts warming up, keep windows closed in both your car and at home and make sure pets don’t bring pollen into your bed.

The pollen starts floating around before you can see the leaves on the trees so it can catch people off guard.

Give us a call so you can get tested.

According to Virginia Ear Nose & Throat, “the period from late February to summer tends to be the worst for many allergy sufferers.” Why? Because “tree pollens such as oak, maple, and river birch are blooming during this time,” making it peak allergy season in Virginia!

In early spring, the dry winds make things worse by spreading allergens and raising the pollen count. As if that’s not enough, the warmer, wet weather “can cause mold count to rise — meaning trouble for those with mold allergies.”

Is It Allergies?

Allergic reactions can manifest in two ways. The first is a histamine reaction that occurs right after someone has been exposed to an allergen. Symptoms include:

Itchy eyes and/or throat
Runny nose
Sneezing
Eye irritation
Nasal congestion
Post-nasal drip
Hoarseness
Sinus Pressure

Those who have been exposed to allergens for a longer period of time, might experience a delayed reaction. The resulting chronic inflammation is characterized and bad nasal congestion and irritation that worsens over time.

Change Filters:
Generally, changing your filters every 60-90 days is acceptable, but if someone in the home suffers from allergies, you’ll need to do it more often. Replacing air filters every 30 days can dramatically improve air quality and help reduce symptoms.

The type and quality of the air filter you chose matters, too. You’ll want to pick something that is appropriate for your home and personal needs. Speaking with a qualified HVAC professional can help!

Clean Air Ducts:
The air in our home is filtered by our HVAC unit and then sent to all areas of our home through ductwork. As you can imagine, dust, allergens, and other contaminants can buildup within the ducts. This can impact efficiency, of course, but dirty ducts can also contribute to poor indoor air quality.

In addition to giving them a thorough cleaning, an HVAC technician can inspect your air ducts for signs of mold and signs of wear and tear. With this information, they may offer suggestions on how to lessen the impact of allergens within your home.

Deep Cleaning:
Staying on top of tidying up is one of the easiest, but most important ways, to fight seasonal allergies. When dust and particles accumulate on surfaces throughout your home, it can increase your suffering. Plus, when you keep things clean, you make it easier for your HVAC to do its job.

Regularly wipe down the furniture in your home, including ceiling fans. Clean between sofa and seat cushions, sweep and mop floors, and thoroughly vacuum any carpeted areas. When possible, use a vacuum with a HEPA filter to maximize your efforts.

Maintain Humidity Levels:
Maintaining ideal humidity levels inside your home is an important step in alleviating seasonal allergies. This is especially important for asthma sufferers in a muggy state like Virginia! Fortunately, your HVAC system can help in this area, too!

A whole-house dehumidifier can clear the damp air, stale air from your home, keeping humidity levels in check. This is beneficial for all of your family members and can be particularly effective at improving indoor air quality.

Scheduled Maintenance:
Having your HVAC unit properly serviced by a qualified technician is incredibly important. Not only can they identify potential problem areas and perform repairs, a professional can offer suggestions for customizing your heating and cooling system to meet your specific needs.

Allergy sufferers may benefit from adding UV technology or an air purifier with a HEPA filter, for example. An HVAC expert can provide guidance for modifying your unit to relieve allergy symptoms and improve your quality of life.

It’s a fact: less than 10% of those who make resolutions keep them long-term. But when it comes to allergies, what are New Year’s resolutions to some are keys for everyday well-being for others. If you’re a patient with allergies yourself or are a support system for someone who is, here are a few common-sense ways you can take charge of your health this year and beyond.

1). Check the forecast.
Before planning your day and even the week ahead, check the local forecast for pollen and mold counts. Plan clothing, activities and even what medicines you need to have on hand to reduce potential flare-ups.

Washing hands is a great way to get rid of allergens (and germs!).

2). Wash your hands.
Make sure to wash your hands, especially after handling pets. Hand-washing can also reduce the risk of transmitting viruses like influenza and the common cold. Many allergy patients are more likely to have frequent colds or sinus infections due to underlying allergic inflammation.

3). Eat healthy.
No diet has been shown to reduce nasal allergy or asthma symptoms. However, eating a balanced diet with fruit, vegetables, and lean protein that is low in refined carbohydrates can improve your overall health. Patients with food allergies can choose healthy alternatives and should avoid cross-contamination with the foods that trigger symptoms.

With New Year’s Day comes New Year’s resolutions. Usually people make resolutions about working out more, waking up earlier, eating better, etc. But have you ever thought about making resolutions based on your food allergies? Here are five resolutions you can make that will help you in your food allergy journey.

Learn to love your food allergies. While we tend to focus on the negatives, there are up sides, too. If we didn’t have food allergies, we wouldn’t be able to enjoy as many home-cooked meals, we wouldn’t have learned to be responsible at such a young age, and we wouldn’t have as much gratitude for things that other people take for granted. There is a ton of good that comes with having food allergies, if you only stop to look.

Become a food allergy advocate. This year, learn how to speak up for yourself and others. Your advocacy doesn’t have to be anything huge or time consuming. Just doing something small will make a huge difference. If you are a teen, I highly recommend joining FARE’s Teen Advisory Group, also known as TAG. The Teen Advisory Group has taught me how to advocate for individuals with food allergies, and I’ve also met some amazing people along the way. Click here to learn more and sign up.

Learn how to make new meals. It can be difficult to find recipes that will accommodate our food allergies. However, there are so many allergy-friendly blogs that can help you with this! Some of my favorites are Allergylicious, Everyday Allergen-Free, and Allergy Awesomeness.

Connect with others who have food allergies. It really helps to have people who understand food allergy problems when no one else does, and who can also swap recipes and tips. Again, the FARE Teen Advisory Group is a great opportunity to connect with other teens who have food allergies. Another great option is the chat function in the Alan app. The Alan app is a food allergy app that has a chat function with options for parents, young adults and teens.

Learn more about food allergies. No matter how much you know about something, there is always more to learn, and this is also true for food allergies. I thought I knew a lot about food allergies, until I joined FARE’s Teen Advisory Group and the food allergy Instagram community. I learned about poverty and food allergies, what it’s like to go through OIT (oral immunotherapy), and much more. If you want to learn more about food allergies, I recommend following a few accounts on Instagram or food allergy blogs. Honestly, anything that you do that is food-allergy focused will help you learn more about food allergies.

EXCITED FOR NEW YEAR’S EVE? IF YOU HAVE FOOD ALLERGIES, PROCEED WITH CAUTION IF YOU’RE AIMING FOR AN UNEXPECTED KISS

Living with allergies, particularly food allergies, can be complicated, but…

Be careful when you kiss.
Ringing in the new year with a kiss is perhaps the best known New Year’s Eve tradition. But did you know it could have some nasty consequences for someone with food allergies? Unfortunately, there have been recent stories of people with food allergies having serious anaphylactic reactions after kissing someone with trace amounts of an allergen on their lips. So, before you pucker up, make sure the person you’re going to kiss hasn’t eaten anything that could give you an allergic reaction, such as peanuts or tree nuts. It’s important to know your allergy and communicate with your partner.
