Is it time to think more deeply about the 4 functions of behavior? In traditional ABA functional analyses, we focus on identifying the "cause" for a behavior as falling under 4 categories: they are seeking attention, hoping to escape something "aversive", they are wanting to access something tangible, or it is automatic/sensory need.

Steve Hayes, the principal founder of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy believes that we must also take into account the humanistic perspective and that we all have "core yearnings." Some of these yearnings even have an evolutionary advantage, so are deeply engrained in each of us.
