📖 Our Story

At Loudoun Funeral Chapel, we are proud of our history and the foundation on which we were built.

The chapel began as the inspired idea of William J. McDonough and his brother-in-law, Robert L. Potterfield III, who saw the need for a funeral home in Leesburg that placed sincere, compassionate service above all else. In June 1977, we opened our doors as Loudoun County’s first and only single-story funeral home built specifically for services, with a formal chapel and spacious visitation rooms.

In August 1980, Loudoun Funeral Chapel purchased the Brown Funeral Home of Lovettsville, Virginia, from Renice and Lucille Brown. In 2012, the Lovettsville operations were consolidated into the Leesburg location, ensuring the same level of care for more families in our community.

Through the years, the McDonough family and dedicated staff have carried this vision forward, expanding, adapting, and serving families with the same compassion and care. In July 2002, after a 7-year battle with leukemia, the community lost a loving and dedicated servant. Bill’s wife, Shirley Potterfield McDonough, her children, grandchildren, and our wonderful staff have continued to provide the same professional and heartfelt service ever since.

This picture, which hangs in our office today, is a daily reminder of our beginnings, our values, and the legacy we are honored to continue. 💙
