Congrats!🧡💙
In May of 2025, six High School students, and eighteen hospital team members received more than $85,000 in scholarship awards. The UF Health Leesburg Hospital Foundation is honored to award thousands of dollars in scholarships annually to students graduating from Leesburg High School, hospital teen volunteers and hospital employees who wish to pursue or advance their career in the healthcare field. Thanks to the generous legacy of several endowments, we are able to continuously support the mission of UF Health Leesburg Hospital Foundation.

At UF Health Medical Group Orthopaedics & Spine, five cutting-edge physicians bring together decades of specialized expertise to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care throughout Lake, Sumter and Marion counties. Together, this powerhouse team represents the best of orthopaedic and spine care—local, skilled and united in one mission: helping patients be at their best.

Dr. Isaac Mitchell, a familiar face in the Leesburg community since 2003, is a fellowship-trained, leading specialist in sports medicine and advanced shoulder care. “I live here, my kids go to school here — I’m invested in helping this community thrive, both in and out of the clinic,” says Dr. Mitchell, who also mentors local students with an interest in medicine.

Dr. Cedric Tankson, a dedicated expert in foot and ankle care, specializes in the comprehensive treatment of complex conditions affecting the lower extremities. “There are certain illnesses you can only manage, but with orthopaedics, you can help someone return to how they were before their injury. That’s one of the things that attracted me to the field,” he says.

Dr. Jon Radnothy brings more than three decades of trusted orthopaedic expertise to UF Health, specializing in robotic joint replacements of the hip, knee and shoulder. Before joining the organization in 2023, he built and led a thriving practice, earning a reputation not only for his clinical excellence but for his unwavering dedication to patient care and community service. “Patients come in for their one-year follow-up and are so fired up because we not only restore a hip or a knee, but their lives,” he says.

Dr. Paul A. Mahle is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in minimally invasive and robotic hip and knee replacements, including complex revision surgeries. A Central Florida native, he joined UF Health about six months ago. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see patients go from pain and limitation to walking, golfing and enjoying life again,” he says.

Rounding out UF Health’s comprehensive orthopaedic and spine care team in central Florida is the recent addition of Dr. Ali Zarezadeh, a fellowship-trained spine surgeon and UF graduate. He specializes in common and complex spine conditions — including degenerative disease, deformity, tumors and traumatic injuries. “My goal is to take away pain and help patients stay active and independent, doing what they love for as long as they can,” he says.

Over the past year, UF Health has responded to the growing community needs by assembling a dynamic team of orthopaedic and spine experts. With deep local roots and advanced expertise, this powerhouse group will continue to deliver exceptional care and lasting impact across the region.

“It's not how much we give but how much love we put into giving." ― Mother Theresa

Our team members who participate in Employee Giving are some of UF Health Leesburg Hospital's biggest supporters! Our UF Health Central Florida employees give so much of their time and talents to our hospitals each and every day to make a difference in the lives of our patients and visitors. No matter the role within our organization, our team members’ personal dedication sends a powerful message to the communities we serve.

This year, we awarded the very first UF Health Leesburg Hospital Foundation EMPLOYEE GIVING CHAMPIONS Trophy to our Sterile Processing Team for their department's level of engagement in our Employee Giving Program!

THANK YOU to our caring and talented employees who make UF Health stronger and allow us to provide exceptional health care to our communities!

Today, in celebration of National Volunteer Month (and National Volunteer Week this week!), we'd like to introduce you to George M., one of our volunteer chaplains. George will have been volunteering with us for 29 years this May!

Q. What is your favorite part about volunteering in your department?
A. My favorite thing about volunteering in the Pastoral Care Department as a volunteer chaplain is being able to assist, encourage, and support those patients who may need someone to listen to them and offer them appropriate spiritual care. There are also times when we interact with staff who may need someone to encourage them in the course of their duties.

Q. What is your favorite thing about volunteering in general?
A. My favorite thing about volunteering in general is the sense of supporting the community, and the benefit of having a sense of purpose and fulfillment in giving of my time to a worthy organization.

Q. What do you love most about the hospital you volunteer in?
A. Something I love about the area of the hospital I work with is the network of volunteer chaplains who sharpen each other, and the excellent direction given to us by Chaplain Mary Vanderplas.

Q. Why did you start volunteering?
A. What made me want to become a volunteer chaplain was the strong encouragement of Rev. Haig Medzarentz, the coordinator of hospital chaplaincy for LRMC at the time, and also that of Rev. Alex Holloway, who said the need was great for volunteer chaplains. I wanted to make myself available to help in this area as best I could. That was in May, 1996.

Q. What is a fun fact about yourself?
A. A fun fact about myself is that, prior to become a Christian in 1972, I was the drummer for The Joint Session rock band in Sarasota, Florida. My parents bought me my first drum set when I was twelve years old.

George, thank you so much for your decades of serving our hospital, our patients, and our community! We are truly so grateful!

Today we are recognizing one of our Mended Hearts volunteers for National Volunteer Month! Gary G. has been volunteering for 4 months, after having his own cardiovascular surgery experience here at UF Health Leesburg Hospital.

Q. What is your favorite thing about volunteering in your area?
A. I enjoy seeing the patient's reaction when I tell them that my open-heart surgery was this past Oct 7th. They are amazed that I am only a few months from my surgery and back to riding bikes and playing bocce.

Q. What is your favorite thing about volunteering in general?
A. I am retired and this gives me the opportunity to help others when they need it most of all.

Q. What is your favorite thing about UF Health Leesburg Hospital?
A. The entire staff that I am around are very friendly and helpful. The nursing staff is fantastic.

Q. Why did you choose to volunteer at the hospital?
A. When I had my open-heart surgery, I really liked talking to the two Mended Hearts members that came to visit me. They went through the same surgery, so they know what I was going through.

Gary, thank you for sharing your ❤ story and your time with our patients and team!

Today we are highlighting some PAW-some volunteers! Christine A. and Cali have volunteered with UF Health Leesburg Hospital through our therapy dog program since January 2025.

Q. What is your favorite thing about volunteering in your department?
A. Seeing the happy welcoming reaction Cali gets from the nurses, for starters. I usually remind them that Cali is good therapy for the staff as well as patients. They definitely agree.

Q. What is your favorite thing about volunteering in general?
A. I can use my free time without a rigid schedule, and knowing what I do pleases the people who meet Cali.

Q. What do you love about the area you volunteer in?
A. What I love about the area I work in is seeing patients there who are not feeling their best physically, and knowing Cali can make them smile for a few minutes. Works every time.

Q. Why did you want to join our group of amazing volunteers?
A. I wanted to join the volunteer group because I can share what I am blessed with - a great therapy dog who is never a problem at all.

Q. What is a fun fact about yourself?
A. A fun fact about myself is that I can happily share with people the fact that I can bring my dog to work!

Thank you to our volunteers who make such a PAWS-itive impact on our team and our patients!

Happy National Volunteer Month! This month we will be celebrating and recognizing the immense contributions of our hospital volunteers. Our volunteers are integral in fulfilling our hospital mission each and every day by providing resources to improve patient care and by promoting a caring environment for visitors and family members.

Our first Volunteer Month highlight features Nancy M., one of our Volunteer Chaplains! She has been volunteering at UF Health Leesburg Hospital for 16 years.

Q. What is your favorite part about volunteering in your department?
A. I am a Chaplain serving on weekends. In general, I think those days are quieter at the hospital, so I have the privacy and privilege of using the quiet to prepare for my visits and also to “wrap up” my visits. And since there are no other volunteers around, I have had to learn things “on the spot”: many times visitors will ask me for directions, where their loved one’s room is, how to get to _____, etc. So, I’m the “go to” person, beyond my title of “Chaplain”.

Q. Why do you love volunteering?
A. It might be a cliché, but, giving of one’s self always is equally rewarding to both the volunteer and the receiver.

Q. What is something you love about the hospital/area you work in?
A. Since I am a chaplain, 99% of my volunteer work is in a patient’s room. It is rewarding and uplifting to experience a change of mood in a patient, a lessening of pain, or an acceptance of prayer, literature, prayer shawl, or the appreciation of a presence. Knowing that I can be a spiritual messenger and listening friend makes it “worth the trip.”

Q. What made you want to join our group of hospital volunteers?
A. Before I ever moved to Florida, I was serving at a hospital in a similar capacity to a chaplain. We were not called “chaplains” there, but our “job” was similar. I enjoyed and felt useful and fulfilled by this previous position, so I wanted to continue once I got settled here in Florida. However, I can say that my position as a chaplain here has far surpassed my previous service in fulfillment, training, appreciation, and spirituality.

Q. What is a fun fact about yourself?
A. I recently took a kick boxing course and loved it! So now I tell people (not patients!!) that “my body is a lethal weapon”!!!

Thank you, Chaplain Nancy, for all you do!
