I often get asked if a LifeVac(dechoking device) should be used when someone is choking. My answer has always been to first go by the gold standard and follow the guidelines set by the American Heart Association to give abdominal thrusts for those over 1 year of age or to give back slaps/chest thrusts to those under 1 year of age. If you are not able to get the item out and the person goes unresponsive you should begin CPR. If someone else is available, at this point they could try to use the de-choking device. Do not delay care to use these devices.

"Established choking rescue protocols, such as the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association, have a high success rate. Anti-choking devices typically require removal from packaging and assembly and could delay using established rescue protocols."

These choking rescue protocols include abdominal thrusts (also called the “Heimlich” maneuver) for children and adults but not anti-choking devices.

All you Swifties out there that have TTPD playing on repeat...If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, you can try to fix him (no really you can) and try to get someone back (from a cardiac arrest) by knowing the two easy steps of Hands-Only CPR. It can double or triple the chances of survival. Just call 911 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest until help arrives.

When I was in nursing school I bought a faceshield keychain and it came everywhere with me for years and years. I luckily never had to use it but I felt proud to have it on hand in case an emergency happened in the community and I could be a Good Samaritan.

Nowadays it is even more important to have a barrier so you can protect yourself when giving breaths during CPR.

Do you know about the emergency features built into your smart phone?
I'm going to review how to use the SOS, Satellite calls and Medical ID features.

On any smart phone, (it does not have to be yours, you can do this from a locked screen) you can tap the side button 5 times quickly or Press and hold the side button and one of the volume buttons until the Emergency SOS slider appears. Drag the Emergency Call slider to SOS Emergency Call. If you continue to hold down the side button and volume button, instead of dragging the slider, a countdown begins and an alert sounds. This feature will also ping your emergency contact and drop your location. Review by going to Settings, Emergency SOS and see what you have set up.

Be sure to have your Medical ID set up in case of emergency so first responders or good samaritans can access your information including health history to help you quicker. Under the medical notes section I put my kid's names and birthdates just in case. This is also a good way for someone to contact your emergency contact if your phone is found somewhere. Have a Scout troop and want them to learn CPR skills? I taught my son's Bears den how to perform CPR and how to use an AED. It was a fun time with six 8-9 year olds!

In honor of Heart Health Month I wanted to give back to the community. Last night, I taught a free class to some of the parents at my kid's school. Even a few kids joined! They all left feeling confident with the cpr skills needed to try to save a child's life!
