Many of yall came to this Spring’s sheep shearing & I wanted to follow up with the journey that same wool took afterwards!
After shearing, the wool was separated, cleaned from debris & washed.
Once you have a collection of 60 POUNDS or more of wool (one adult fleece averages about 5-7 pounds), it can be sent to a wool mill. Mills have equipment to further clean, card & spin the wool into yarn that is much for efficient, uniform and consistent quality than hand spinning.
Check out these pictures from the sheep, to the mill, to the yarn! Michelle Silberman is the fiber artist using this wool and she will also be utilizing natural dyes to color some of this batch’s yarn.
How satisfying to see something like this come full circle - the slow, tedious - yet beautiful - process of natural fibers will always be superior to their plastic/petroleum based “fast-fashion” counterparts we see in most clothing today. That’s just a personal opinion though 😉 - what do you think? Cotton, linen, wool, angora, etc for you…or do you prefer the feel of polyester, nylon, rayon, acrylic synthetic fibers?
