Meet Alex Collopy PhD, MSW Intern from our Sandy location.

"I help clients understand and experience themselves and their worlds in new ways."

Alex sees clients starting at age 3 and her areas of interest are child therapy, anxiety, depression, and college and graduate students.

Fun facts: Former college instructor at Penn State, Weber State, and University of Utah, and former preschool teacher. I love reading, camping, and studying Judaism. My favorite tattoo I have is a “squiggle” drawn by a child from the case files of therapist Donald Winnicott.

When our once-chatty, cuddly kiddos turn into teenagers, parents are often caught off guard by the changes that come with adolescence.

Teens often stop actively seeking physical affection and may pull away from conversations with us, even as they spend hours talking with friends.
This withdrawal can feel personal, even painful.
But there’s hope, and there are tools.

Here are 3 tips for reconnecting with your teen
1️⃣ Step back and listen. When they come to you to vent or share, resist the urge to jump in with solutions. Instead, validate their feelings: “That sounds really hard.” Creating a safe space for their emotions builds trust.
2️⃣ Give yourself time to calm down. Intense emotions often lead to intense words, and that rarely helps. Instead, give yourself a moment (or more) to calm down before addressing it. Some of the best conversations happen in low-pressure environments
3️⃣ Don’t be afraid to apologize. You’re going to make mistakes. All parents do. What matters is how you respond afterward. Modeling humility by saying “I’m sorry” teaches your teen that it’s okay to own mistakes and repair relationships.

Our job as parents is to be the life jacket. We can’t prevent the storms, but we can offer safety through the storms. If you or your teen need support, reach out to Wasatch Family Therapy.

The most important thing you can do to cope healthily after being rejected is to understand that rejection does not reflect your self-worth.

You are unique, valuable, and worthy of love.

If you have been rejected and need help navigating the feelings and emotions stemming from that rejection, it may be time to schedule a therapy appointment.

Every transition, no matter how difficult, presents an opportunity for growth. As you move through changes, you can develop new skills, discover strengths you didn't know you had, encounter people you wouldn’t otherwise, and gain deeper self-awareness.

Ask yourself, "What can I learn from this experience?" and allow yourself to grow through the discomfort.

While routines can be helpful, it’s equally important to be flexible. Transitions are unpredictable by nature, and trying to control every aspect of the change can lead to frustration. Practice flexibility by allowing yourself to adapt to the unknown, and remind yourself that it’s okay for things to unfold gradually.

The therapists at Wasatch Family Therapy in Utah would be honored to hold space for you as you learn to embrace flexibility.

Setting boundaries is healthy, and you don’t need to justify every decision.
Start small: “I can’t commit to that right now,” or “That doesn’t work for me,” may be some language to try.
The more you do it, the easier it gets. You can still be kind and generous while having boundaries.
True generosity comes from a place of choice, not obligation, and setting limits actually helps you show up for others in a more authentic way.

People-pleasing usually comes from fear. Fear of rejection, a need for validation, or past experiences that made you feel like other people’s needs should always come first.

Start noticing when you automatically say “yes.” Is it because you want to, or because you feel like you should?
Who in your life do you struggle to say “no” to?

Awareness is the first step in changing the habit.
