What is the difference between subcutaneous and visceral fat? Subcutaneous fat is fat the can be found directly underneath the skin. This is the stuff people are usually referring to when they mention things like love-handles, muffin-top, double chin, arm flab, etc. Essentially, its the stuff you can grab.
Visceral fat, however, is not the stuff you can grab. Visceral fat is fat the develops around your vital organs. It is necessary because it helps provide cushion to your organs as you bump into things throughout your day. Often, visceral fat can grow around the stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas, and other abdominal organs.
Cosmetic providers, including Honu Medical, are able to remove your subcutaneous fat. These procedures are straight forward and proven. The fat is easy to access (right underneath the skin) and can be reliably contoured.
Visceral fat can be frustrating because it can increase the size of the torso as it increases in size around your vital organs. This gives people a "wider" appearance and they sometimes want to get the fat removed to appear thinner. Unfortunately, visceral fat is not removed in cosmetic procedures due to the proximity to vital organs and also the depth of the fat (beneath muscle and bone in some cases).
The rate at which people accumulate visceral fat versus subcutaneous fat is determined by life choices and genetics. Males are more likely to develop visceral fat than females. Also, people who consume large amounts of calories on a daily basis are more likely to develop visceral fat. Consumption of highly processed foods also likely contribute to visceral fat growth.
To determine if your torso inches are due to visceral or subcutaneous fat, you can perform the grab test. If your fist is full of tissue when you grab a portion of your torso, arms, legs, or chin, then you are likely dealing with subcutaneous fat. If you aren't able to create much of a handful but you still have a wide torso, you are likely dealing with visceral fat.
