AI is officially in our schools. And for student support teams, that can feel exciting… overwhelming… and honestly, a little risky.

The real question isn’t should schools use AI. It’s how do we use it without losing what matters most?

Used thoughtfully, AI can take some of the weight off:
• Less time buried in paperwork
• More time with students
• Smoother collaboration across teams

But AI can’t replace clinical judgment, it can’t build trust. and it can’t sit with a student in a hard moment.

Student support is human work and using technology should protect that work.

At eLuma, we believe responsible AI use starts with clear guardrails, ethical practices, and training that empowers professionals (not replaces them) so students always stay at the center.

What role can AI play in school-based therapy?

Here are four insights from our recent webinar with Sarah Plunkett, M.S., CCC-SLP (and they say it all):

💬 “Education is significantly under-resourced, and there are shortages everywhere. AI tools can support repetitive tasks and help us be more efficient.”

💬 “AI is not a substitute for our clinical judgment.”

💬 “[AI is] not meant to replace our own abilities, but to help us do what we do best—being human and working with other humans.”

💬 “AI does not understand. It only predicts patterns in data. That’s why we remain essential in the process.”

➡️ AI can speed up documentation.
➡️ AI can streamline prep and planning.
➡️ AI can help free up time.

But the heart of effective support will always be human connection, clinical insight, and the understanding that comes only from lived professional experience.

At eLuma, we believe AI should empower (not replace) and be used intentionally to better support students, staff, and services.

What’s one task you’d love for AI to take off your plate so you can spend more time focused on students?

Districts are navigating rising behavior challenges, attendance dips, and growing mental health needs, yet most concerns aren’t identified until they’ve already escalated.

A strong Tier I & II system starts with early, evidence-based screening.

On Dec 16, we’re hosting a webinar that breaks down:
-What early warning signs districts often miss
-How universal screening strengthens prevention and intervention
-Practical steps for using data to support student well-being
-Lessons learned from Illinois’s universal mental health screening mandate

Over the past several weeks, our team has been coast-to-coast connecting with the incredible educators, leaders, and clinicians who make this work matter. From Illinois to Georgia to Florida, we've had the chance to learn, share, and deepen the partnerships that help students thrive.

At the IAASE Fall Conference, Chris enjoyed spending time with IAASE Executive Director Melissa Taylor and connecting with so many dedicated special education leaders. We loved seeing the energy and engagement in the sessions, it’s clear the commitment to student support is stronger than ever.

At the PTW Conference, our team proudly joined Wear Red Wednesday to raise awareness for student homelessness- an issue none of us can ignore. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat with Chris Niemeyer and MaryEllen Brummond and for standing with us.

In Savannah, Andrew Codding had a full schedule at Georgia CASE, including a wonderful dinner with district leaders. Every conversation reinforced just how committed this community is to building stronger systems of support.

And at ASHA, our team Sarah Plunkett, Kandace Whitman, and Kirstin Moore kicked off the week with our brand-new booth backdrop. Even Moose the therapy dog made an appearance… and after a full day of greeting new friends, he’s officially wiped out. 🐾

We’re grateful for the connections, the conversations, and the shared commitment to supporting the whole child. If we crossed paths at any of these events...thank you. If not, we hope to see you at the next one.

Here’s to the work ahead.
