Jambo!
As we end our wonderful vision humanitarian trip to Kenya, as with any of my previous trips, I'm filled with gratitude. This isn't gratitude for all I have, but for all I have been able to feel. We saw over a thousand people here of all ages, and while that is much lower than previous trips, I can have peace and joy in what we have done.
Mother Teresa was once asked why she did what she did, that her efforts were but I drop in the ocean. Her response is beautiful. "We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop." No matter how large or (mostly) small our efforts, the world and our brothers would be that much poorer if we withheld our hand.
When you travel around and see so many people in so many situations, you learn and hopefully internalize certain truths. Happiness and sadness look the same. Wealth and poverty look the same. However, one is not absolutely tied to another. There is great joy among the destitute and despair can plague the rich. What determines that comes from within and what you choose to do to know and bless your brothers and sisters that you haven't even met yet!
We will miss you Kenya, but will remember you in our hearts! I hope in the coming years, many of my friends, whether you are doctors or not, will join me on a trip and be a part of this great work!
