The shooting of Charlie Kirk at the UVU campus hit close to home with our clinic 15 minutes away. We personally know staff and students that work and attend there.
It has stirred up a lot of feelings for us that cannot be adequately addressed in a single social media post.
What I do want to say is that gun and political violence should not be a partisan issue. To be better collectively, we must condemn it regardless of political affiliation. It is hard to see voices quiet when someone is murdered on the political spectrum they don’t align with but loud when it does. It is painful to see preventable deaths due to gun violence with no changes to any laws despite the majority of Americans believing reasonable gun control measures should exist.
We do not have to all hold the same values or opinions but I do believe seeing the humanity in each other, regardless of political affiliation would make us a better country. Harmful partisan rhetoric, the othering of those different from us, or living life different than our values and beliefs, is not decreasing the violence in our country. I fear it is only increasing it.
As therapists, we get to hold space with people often different from us in beliefs, ideologies, and identities. Yet, we get the privilege of seeing them as just as human as us… we all know what it’s like to feel shame, sad, lonely, scared, joyful.
Holding different values, coming from a different country, practicing a different religion, having different sexual preferences or gender identity SHOULD NOT be a partisan issue. It’s hard to hate up close, and we can’t ignore that marginalizing those different from us, and doing so loudly, isn’t also part of the problem contributing to the rise in violence.
As a clinic we are currently exploring ways to support those directly impacted by the shooting. Our page will be updated today to reflect this.
