Happy Veterans Day to all my fellow Veterans!

Here are a few facts about Veterans Day that some may not know.

1) Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day, and was meant to be the day that celebrated the victory of the Allied forces during WWI.

2) In 1947 Raymond Weeks aka Father of Veterans Day held the first “National Veterans Day” celebration in Birmingham, AL to honor all Vets in addition to those who served in WWII.

3) in 1954 after a U.S. representative from Kansas by the name of Edward Rees proposed a bill to change the name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day, President Eisenhower signed the bill confirming the change.

4) The reason there is no apostrophe in Veterans Day. The apostrophe between the N and the S would represent possession, Veterans Day is not a day that belongs to or is owned by Veterans. It is a day for everyone regardless if they’ve served or not to reflect on the sacrifices of those that have served. The day may be dedicated to Veterans, but it is not owned by Veterans.

5) In 2016 President Barack Obama signed the Veterans Day Moment of Silence Act. Which means that at 3:11pm (Atlantic Standard Time) every Veterans Day the current President will issue an official moment of silence for 2 minutes.

Here is the shirt of the month for October. We all now that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast Cancer Awareness is very close to my heart! Not only is my mom a survivor, but so are 2 of my Aunt’s, a really close friend and a friend that I have had for as long as I can remember.

According to the Mayo Clinic, Breast Cancer is the second leading case of death in women overall. So ladies make sure you are checking the girls for anything that seems out of the norm and have a mammogram once a year or as director by your doctor.

This is a little late, but September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Ovarian cancer is the cause of more deaths than any other cancer in the reproductive system, it also ranks 5th in the United States for cancer related deaths in women. According to the American Cancer Society there are more than 19,000 new cases every year.
