One of the hardest parts of being a pediatric physical therapist is saying goodbye to the families who become such a special part of your life. Today, Mrs. Kirsti had to say goodbye to an amazing set of triplets as they begin a new adventure out of state.

"Watching these 3 grow, learn, work hard and hit milestones has been such a privilege. Our Wednesdays were full of girl time, laughter, determination, chaos and so much joy. I can’t thank their family enough for letting me be such a small part of their journey. " - From Mrs. Kirsti

May is Better Hearing & Speech Month: a time to celebrate every sound, word, gesture, and milestone that helps children connect with the world around them. 💙

Communication comes in many forms, and every child develops at their own pace. Whether your child is learning first words, improving pronunciation, building social skills, or finding new ways to express themselves, every step forward matters.

Speech and hearing skills play an important role in:
✨ Learning
✨ Building friendships
✨ Expressing needs and feelings
✨ Confidence and independence

Early support can make a big difference, and therapy can help children strengthen the skills they need to communicate successfully at home, at school, and in everyday life.

We celebrate all the little victories: the first sounds, new words, confident conversations, and the hard work behind them every day. 👏🗣️👂

Behavior is communication. 💙

Meltdowns. Refusals. Shutting down.
They’re not “bad behavior”, they’re messages.

Children often communicate through behavior when they don’t yet have the words, coping skills, or emotional regulation to express what they need.

Behind every behavior is something deeper:
✨ unmet needs
✨ big feelings
✨ frustration
✨ sensory overload
✨ skills still developing

Instead of silencing the behavior, we can work to understand the “why” behind it.

When children feel understood, we can begin teaching safer, more meaningful ways to communicate those same feelings and needs. And that’s where growth happens. 🌱

✨ Memorial Day Closure Notice ✨

Our clinics will be closed on Memorial Day as we take time to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. ❤️🤍💙

We hope all of our families enjoy a safe and meaningful holiday with loved ones. Regular therapy sessions will resume following the holiday.

Thank you to all who have served and sacrificed.

💬🧠 What is Receptive Language? 🧠💬

Receptive language is a child’s ability to understand words, directions, questions, and conversations. Before children can fully express themselves, they first need to understand the language around them! 💙

Children use receptive language skills when they:
👂 Follow directions
📚 Understand stories
🗣️ Answer questions
🎨 Identify objects, colors, or body parts
👫 Understand social conversations and routines

💡 Simple ways parents can support receptive language at home:
✨ Read books together and talk about the pictures
✨ Give simple, clear directions
✨ Use repetition during daily routines
✨ Ask questions throughout play and activities
✨ Name and describe objects during everyday tasks
✨ Use gestures and visual supports when needed

Remember, language development happens little by little through everyday interactions, play, and communication. Early support can help children build strong listening and understanding skills for success at home, school, and beyond! 💙

👂🧠 Understanding Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) 🧠👂

Does your child seem to hear sounds normally, but still struggle to understand or process what is being said? It could be related to Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) — a difficulty with how the brain interprets sounds and spoken language. 💙

💡 It’s important to know that APD is not a hearing loss. A child may hear sounds clearly, but their brain may have difficulty organizing and understanding the information.

Early support and intervention can help children build confidence and communication skills. If you have concerns about your child’s listening or language development, our therapy team is here to help! 💙

🧸✨ Tummy Time Play Ideas for Babies ✨🧸

Tummy time is an important part of your baby’s development! It helps strengthen neck, shoulder, arm, and core muscles that support rolling, sitting, crawling, and other motor milestones. The best part? It can be FUN! 💙

Remember: tummy time should always be supervised and done when baby is awake. 💙

🌱💭 Helping Kids Build a Growth Mindset 💭🌱

The way children think about challenges can shape their confidence, resilience, and willingness to try new things. Teaching a growth mindset helps kids understand that mistakes are part of learning and that abilities grow with practice! 💙

💡 Try writing these on sticky notes, saying them during homework time, or practicing them together before difficult tasks. Small words of encouragement can help build lifelong confidence and perseverance!

Every child grows at their own pace, and celebrating effort, not just outcomes, can make a lasting impact. 🌟

🫧🎈🎶 Speech Development Can Be FUN! 🎶🎈🫧

Did you know everyday play activities can help support your child’s speech and oral motor development? Simple, playful tools can encourage breath control, mouth strength, coordination, and communication skills, all while having fun! 💬✨

Here are a few easy ideas to try at home:

🥤 Straws – Drinking through straws of different sizes can help build lip strength and coordination needed for speech sounds.

🫧 Bubbles – Blowing bubbles encourages breath support, mouth control, and can even spark language opportunities (“big bubble,” “pop,” “more!”).

🎈 Balloons – Blowing up balloons (with supervision) can help practice deep breathing, breath control, and oral muscle coordination.

🎶 Whistles & Instruments – Kazoos, whistles, harmonicas, and party blowers are playful ways to strengthen breath control and oral coordination while making music and having fun!

💡 Bonus Tip for Parents: Turn these activities into a game! Take turns, practice requesting (“more,” “my turn”), naming colors, counting, or describing what you see to build language skills too.

Every child develops at their own pace, and playful practice can make a big difference. If you have concerns about your child’s speech or communication skills, we’re here to help! 💙
