The Free Hearing Test (And Why We Don’t Do It)
A lot of audiologists and hearing aid specialists offer free hearing tests to new patients. It’s an appealing offer – why pay for something you can get for free? But, as the old saying goes, there is no such thing as a free lunch. And there is no such thing as a free hearing test.
Why Offer Free Testing?
Hearing aid specialists and big box retailers usually don’t charge for hearing tests because they don’t have credentials to bill insurance for testing. Their level of expertise is low resulting in improper or incomplete results putting your hearing and your hearing health in jeopardy. There are standards and best practices that ethical professionals agree to adhere to and that does not include an incomplete evaluation in environments that will prejudice the results.
Why We Don’t Do It
A good diagnostic Audiologic Evaluation takes time and expertise. This is performed to locate the problem IF there is a hearing loss then the Audiologist decides what intervention is necessary, medical referral for possible cure treatment, no action, or hearing instrument assistance and what kind implant ear mounted etc. You should not proceed with an hearing treatment without a Doctor of Audiology's expert advice. Doctors of Audiology are the hearing expert rigorously trained to rehabilitate non curable hearing loss. Another professionals opinion is not valid in the area of hearing impairment.
A free hearing test is most times a screening not a full diagnostic and is used to generate hearing aid sales.
