Recently, members of our Include Me team got hands-on and creative using LEGO Serious Play (LSP) at Warrior Run High School in Northumberland County as part of its Pre-Employment Transition Services Program.

LSP sessions have a process that is repeated throughout: question, build, share, and capture. The group is asked a question, each participant builds a LEGO model to answer the question, they take turns explaining their model, and then the group has a deeper, more meaningful conversation. LSP invites participants to ā€˜think with their handsā€™ to build their understandings. Every member of the team participates, and everyone has a voice.

Through this building and storytelling, students were able to share and explore in an engaging, student-centered process. Because when we give students the right tools, their voices come through loud and clear!

Fifty-five years ago on January 7, 1971, The Arc of Pennsylvania (then known as PARC) filed a federal class-action lawsuit against the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to challenge state laws that allowed schools to deny a free public education to students it deemed ā€œineducableā€. This was the first major right-to-education suit in the U.S. We won the case with a landmark consent decree requiring schools to provide a free and appropriate public education for all students in the least restrictive environment. The suit and settlement were quickly copied by advocates in 26 other federal court cases, pressuring Congress to act and eventually leading to the passage of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) which recently turned 50 years old.
