KC Bariatric has been in practice since 2002, providing weight loss surgery care to thousands of patients in the metropolitan Kansas City and surrounding mid-west areas. We provide patient education, full preoperative evaluation of each patient's mental and physical health, coordination of care, assistance with insurance issues, and post-operative support groups in order to help ensure the safety and success of our patients. Weight loss surgery is not cosmetic surgery, nor does it actually "remove" a patient's excess weight. It is a TOOL that assists in weight loss and weight maintenance for patients who are 100 or more pounds overweight and who have failed weight loss through traditional dietary and behavior modifications. If you or someone you love is obese, you know how difficult life can be. Excess weight impacts your health, your self-esteem, and your relationships. People with obesity are at greater risk for serious health conditions such as high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and diabetes. When diet and exercise aren't working, it may seem like there is no hope. At KC Bariatric, we specialize in providing alternatives for the care and treatment of obesity and its related co-morbidities in the forms of Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and LapBand Gastric Banding Surgeries. If you are considering the decision to undergo weight loss surgery, you'll want to educate yourself on these life-changing procedures. We are here to answer all of your questions and to determine if you are a candidate for surgery through our program.

Protein is one of the most important tools in protecting your results long term. It does more than just “build muscle.” It helps:
✔ Preserve lean muscle mass while you’re losing weight
✔ Support metabolism so your body burns efficiently
✔ Promote healing after surgery
✔ Reduce hair thinning
✔ Improve energy and recovery
✔ Keep you full longer (which helps prevent grazing)
In the rapid weight loss phase, your body will lose fat and muscle if you’re not intentional. Prioritizing protein first at every meal helps protect the muscle you worked so hard to build - especially if you’re strength training.

How much do you need?
Most bariatric patients are advised to aim for 60–90g per day (some may need more depending on goals and activity level).

Simple strategy:
🥩 Protein first
🥦 Veggies second
🥔 Carbs last (if there’s room)

If you’re struggling to hit your numbers, protein shakes, high-protein yogurt, eggs, cottage cheese, and lean meats can help close the gap - especially in early post-op stages.

Remember: surgery is a tool. Protein is how you protect it.

"In October of 2024 I took the first step and called the office to start the process. After years of being overweight following five pregnancies very close together, I was ready for a change. In December I was at my first appointment in the office. I would have to drive 3 hours but I knew it would be worth it because KC Bariatric has a reputation of being professional and successful. I had gastric sleeve surgery April 23rd of 2025. In 9 months I lost just short of 100 lbs. I worked really hard to follow the directions in the binder and really tried to focus on the surgery being a tool in a lifelong journey to better health. I had great support from my husband and my children and many of my friends in the community. I have to look back at pictures from a year ago to remind myself how far I've come. I have hit the maintenance phase now and I am really enjoying my life for the first time in a long time. Have gone back to the gym now and lift weights and walk a couple of times a week. I can cross my legs for the first time in 20 plus years. I am shopping in whatever stores I want and it is so fun! If you've been thinking about it, go for it. It is absolutely worth it. Do it for you. Do it for your children and grandchildren. Do it for your knees and your back. I am so grateful for this new life."

"I've struggled with my weight since 2014 after an accident and i believe certain medications that I was put on plus bad jeans put the weight on and I struggled to get it off. On February 26th 2025 I had the sleeve done by Dr Hamilton. It worked great for a little while then I stayed steady with 60 lbs off then was slowly gaining weight again. I opted for the RNY October 15th 2025 and as of January 25th I am 113 lbs down and losing at a nice steady pace. I started this journey at hw-333 cw-220. I do have to thank the wonderful team of Dr Hamilton's at KC Bariatric for the wonderful treatment and help with everything I couldn't be more grateful and appreciative for all they've done."

Dr. Michelle Coker shares simple, powerful ways loved ones can show up and truly support someone after bariatric surgery:
✔️ Take time to learn about weight loss surgery
✔️ Make healthy choices alongside them
✔️ Have open conversations about emotions and expectations
✔️ Attend support group meetings together
Support doesn’t mean “fixing.”
