Honoring Healing: PTSD and Traditional Wisdom in Native American Communities

June is not only Men’s Mental Health Awareness month but also PTSD Awareness Month, and it's vital we shine a light on the unique challenges faced by Native American men—many of whom carry not only personal trauma but the weight of intergenerational wounds. For centuries, Native communities have endured forced assimilation, cultural erasure, and systemic violence. These experiences have left deep scars, contributing to high rates of PTSD, depression, addiction, and su***de. But healing is not new to Native peoples. It is ancient. It is sacred. And it is powerful.

Traditional healing practices—like sweat lodges, talking circles, storytelling, and ceremonies—offer more than therapy. They restore balance, reconnect individuals to community, land, and spirit, and affirm the sacredness of every person. In many Native worldviews, healing is not just about the individual. It’s about the whole community and restoring relationships. Let’s honor these traditions. Let’s listen. Let’s support culturally grounded healing for Native men and all Indigenous peoples.

If you or someone you know is struggling, know that healing is possible! Sunflower Health Plan recognizes the importance that American Indians and Alaska Natives place on Traditional Healing. One of our Value-Added Benefits (VABs) specifically for our AI/AN members is our Traditional Healing benefit. All AI/AN Sunflower Health Plan members are eligible for a $200 Traditional Healing allowance to use for their tribal, family, or personal practices. Whether it's for ceremonies, medicines, or cultural support, this benefit is here to honor your path to wellness.

To access this benefit, please contact Sunflower’s Tribal Liaison, Jennifer Wofford at 913-249-0400—we’re here to support your healing journey.
