Re-birthing the Light
Happy Sun Day!
Today, we celebrate the birth of light with the Sun’s ingress into the sign of Capricorn. Astrology is the symbolic study of light. The ancients viewed the Sun as the giver of light, with light representing perception, life force, and divine intellect.
Thanks to the Sun, all planets in our solar system, along with the Moon receive and reflect this light. Light reveals and makes things apparent. Therefore the Sun, along with light, have always been associated with divination and seeing the past, present, and future clearly.
Due to the Sun’s consistent movement through the Zodiac from our vantage point, Demetra George points out in her book Ancient Astrology Volume One, “the Sun orders the seasons of the year.“
The meaning of the zodiac signs is derived from our visceral experience of the seasons along with the symbolism that surrounds the sign. Capricorn marks the start of Winter, a time of hunkering down and strategically rationing our resources to make it through the cold and fallow months of this harsh season.
But we also have a way to combat the doom and gloom of the approaching winter that we humans have been practicing for millenia. If our ancestors were blessed with a good harvest and put in the effort to prepare for the winter, then they could celebrate. This tradition is still true today.
Since the Sun is still weak, we must provide the warmth and light which is why many cultures have celebrations around this time of year that involve candles, colored lights, and stoking fires to accompany the festivities. This is a form of sympathy magic, In its most rudimentary form, sympathy magic can be thought of as magic based on imitation. These artificial sources of light represent this solar light that is lacking, but growing stronger every day. This replication of light is a remedy to dank the cold, wetness of winter.
Today, take time out to bask in the budding sunlight. Light a candle or turn on colored lights in honor of the Sun. Perhaps find ways to generate heat by moving your body to some stimulating music or go for a walk and take in the light and shadows with your eyes. This little bit of sympathy magic can help keep you warm in the coming months.
Happy Solstice!!
