AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER: SO MUCH MORE THAN GENETICS.
This far-reaching paper, “Autism Spectrum Disorder from the Womb to Adulthood: Suggestions for a Paradigm Shift,” adumbrates the expansive interplay of myriad factors impacting NEURODEVELOPMENTAL DISORDERS, primarily focusing on ASD - AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER, but also noting some now-all-too-common comorbidities.
The authors point out the critical period of neurodevelopment - the “first 1000 days” - the time from conception into the first 2 years of life, where brain/CNS change and growth are incredibly rapid, and thus extremely vulnerable to deleterious impacts - many of them external/environmental, and not simply random flaws in embryological development.
These include MIA - Maternal Immune Activation, gut-brain axis dysfunctions, metabolic issues, cellular-mitochondrial malfunction and associated oxidative stress, and the tremendous life-altering impacts of epigenetic influences.
It is crucial to understand and be proactive regarding mental/emotional stresses and environmental toxicants, whether auto pollution, pesticide and fertilizer use, household chemicals, parental age, maternal stress and/or intake of prescription and OTC medications, or alcohol, to***co, or recreational drugs.
Post-natal, many children are adversely affected by food proteins such as gliadins and caseins, which can compromise the integrity of intestinal epithelial tight junctions and contribute to hyper-leaky or fragile gut.
Excess permeability of the gut barrier has been found to contribute to compromise of the Blood-Brain Barrier.
These authors call for a Paradigm Shift, and a full accounting for the interactions of multiple internal and external impacts on the whole person, in development, and throughout life.
