For many people, the journey to researching and treating post-concussion survivors is a personal one. Dr. Greig Andrews is no different, and today he talks about how his experiences treating athletes and his loved ones led him to the field of functional neurology with a special interest in post-conc

VA**NG IS ASSOCIATED WITH ANXIETY, DEPRESSION, AND ADDICTIVE BEHAVIORS.
-Research links va**ng to inflammation in multiple organs, including heart, lungs, colon, and brain.
“Changes in neuroinflammatory gene expression were noted in the nucleus accumbens, a brain region critical for motivation and reward-processing.”
“Neuroinflammation in this region has been linked to anxiety, depression and addictive behaviors, which could further exacerbate substance use and addiction.”

Daily va**ng of pod-based e-cigarettes alters inflammatory states across multiple organs, including the brain. The effects vary depending upon the v**e flavors and influence how the body responds to infections. Mint v**es, for example, leave people more sensitive to the effects of bacterial pneumoni...

Take your child to a museum, gallery, art show, play, concert, dance performance. Read with them, draw, paint, throw clay with them. Sing, play music, dance with them. Best of all - encourage them to get involved in these activities in school or the community, like singing in a chorus/choir, acting in a play, performing in a concert or recital, or submitting their art or writing to a show or for publishing. Encourage them to share their creative impulses!

Participating in artistic or culturally enriching activities such as acting and dance, or attending concerts reduces a teenager's risk of antisocial or criminal activities, a new study reveals.

“The core of attachment theory is whether the child trusts their primary caregiver to provide warmth and comfort when needed. Inconsistent or unreliable support from the caregiver can lead to a pattern of insecure attachment.”

Teens who had an insecure attachment to their mothers as toddlers are more likely to overestimate the trustworthiness of strangers, a new study reports.

Eating too much processed sugar over time can contribute to inflammatory auto-immune conditions, such as Crohn’s, Ulcerative Colitis, Diabetes Type I, and inflammatory thyroid conditions.

Excessive glucose consumption directly promotes the pathological function of certain cells within the immune system. Calorie-reduced diets can have beneficial effects on the immune system and have autoimmune diseases.

We need to support and advocate on behalf of our children, in school and outside of it. It’s challenging enough for them when they are “neuronormative,” but when you add any kind of “brain difference,” such as TBI, it can be that much tougher for them.

Parents and teachers need to learn about the myriad changes that can happen after a TBI; every child -- and his injury -- is different.

CRITICAL CONVERSATIONS between ASTROCYTES & NEURONS allow ASTROCYTES to GUIDE NEURONS in the creation and maintenance of SYNAPSES.
Disruption of NORMAL NEURONAL SYNAPSE DEVELOPMENT is implicated in NDD’s - NEURO-DEVELOPMENTAL DISORDERS, including ASD - AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS.
NEW RESEARCH provides more detailed understanding of these feedback processes, and the role of NEUROTRANSMITTERS such as GLUTAMATE in them.

We doctors at DELTA S PERFORMANCE incorporate constantly-evolving research in our CLINICAL APPLICATIONS. We work with your brain’s feedback mechanisms every single day.

And I work with NDD’s - NEURODEVELOPMENTAL DISORDERS.

AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER: SO MUCH MORE THAN GENETICS.
This far-reaching paper, “Autism Spectrum Disorder from the Womb to Adulthood: Suggestions for a Paradigm Shift,” adumbrates the expansive interplay of myriad factors impacting NEURODEVELOPMENTAL DISORDERS, primarily focusing on ASD - AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER, but also noting some now-all-too-common comorbidities.
The authors point out the critical period of neurodevelopment - the “first 1000 days” - the time from conception into the first 2 years of life, where brain/CNS change and growth are incredibly rapid, and thus extremely vulnerable to deleterious impacts - many of them external/environmental, and not simply random flaws in embryological development.
These include MIA - Maternal Immune Activation, gut-brain axis dysfunctions, metabolic issues, cellular-mitochondrial malfunction and associated oxidative stress, and the tremendous life-altering impacts of epigenetic influences.
It is crucial to understand and be proactive regarding mental/emotional stresses and environmental toxicants, whether auto pollution, pesticide and fertilizer use, household chemicals, parental age, maternal stress and/or intake of prescription and OTC medications, or alcohol, to***co, or recreational drugs.
Post-natal, many children are adversely affected by food proteins such as gliadins and caseins, which can compromise the integrity of intestinal epithelial tight junctions and contribute to hyper-leaky or fragile gut.
Excess permeability of the gut barrier has been found to contribute to compromise of the Blood-Brain Barrier.
These authors call for a Paradigm Shift, and a full accounting for the interactions of multiple internal and external impacts on the whole person, in development, and throughout life.

BREASTFEEDING MOMS BESTOW PROTECTIVE BENEFITS ON THEIR BABIES RELATIVE TO COGNITIVE DEFICITS, ADHD, ASD.
However, some mothers - or other kinds of parents - are simply not able to breastfeed. Physicians should not shame them. Fortunately, there are healthy organic formula options today, and breastfeeding simulators.

If a parent must use a bottle and formula, they can still optimize the most important psycho-emotional aspect of baby feeding - BONDING. Engaging in loving eye contact, gentle touch, and making soothing sounds, are crucial to an infant’s early life.
