A complication during back surgery led to the loss of Mike Bilbrey's leg. The shock of waking up in a different hospital without his leg was devastating, and he had no idea what his future held.
According to the Amputee Coalition, 36% of people living with limb loss experience some degree of depression. Mike was no exception.
The first time Mike met Certified Prosthetist Tom Reece at our NovaCare Prosthetics & Orthotics center in Marion, he caught a glimpse of hope that he would be able to live a normal life again. With Tom aiding in his recovery, Mike has been able to accomplish personal goals, including going fishing and hunting and even working for a few hours a week.
After meeting fellow individuals who have experienced limb loss and limb difference, visiting support groups and even starting one of his own, Mike is now a hospital peer visitor. He talks with new amputees, lending support and guidance, so they don't feel so alone. Mike knows how easy it is to sink into depression, and he wants to help others avoid those feelings.
"Becoming an amputee isn't the end of the world, it's just a new adventure," Mike said.
We're so proud of you, Mike, and to have been part of your prosthetic journey.
