Many people get stuck in the talk therapy loop for years, and while it's always important to be able to have a space to talk through and process problems verbally, there are a few reasons why trauma cannot always be resolved solely through talking:

Non-verbal nature of trauma: Traumatic experiences often involve intense emotions, sensations, and physiological responses that go beyond words. Some aspects of trauma may be stored in the body rather than in explicit memories or narratives. Therefore, solely talking about the trauma may not address these non-verbal elements.

Incomplete processing: Trauma can overwhelm the brain's ability to effectively process and integrate the experience. Simply talking about the trauma may not provide sufficient support for the brain to fully process the traumatic event, leading to lingering distress.

Lack of safety and trust: Trauma can profoundly affect an individual's sense of safety and trust. Talking about the trauma may sometimes retraumatize the person if they feel unsafe or lack trust in the therapeutic relationship. Building a foundation of safety and trust is crucial before diving into traumatic experiences.

Limited awareness: Trauma can lead to dissociation, amnesia, or fragmented memories, which can hinder a person's ability to fully articulate and comprehend their experiences. In such cases, talking alone may not be enough to uncover and process the entirety of the trauma.

Works on different parts of the brain:
Talk therapy accesses the "rational" side of the brain, drawing from stories and narratives that "make sense". Trauma is reactions, feelings, sensations, and emotions stored in the body. To access the trauma, it's essential to speak to the emotional side of the brain - housed in the body.

Earning the name โ€œaccelerated resolutionโ€ ART has seen results for patients in 1-5 sessions. Some clients may choose to use this modality in conjunction with other treatments. ART can be used as a stand-alone or in conjunction with Talk, CBT, or other therapies.

The practitioner provides scripts and guidance, but the clients is fully in control of the session and where it goes. The client doesnโ€™t even have to share the distressing story!

Whatโ€™s more, unlike Exposure Therapy, the client does not need to take home โ€œHomeworkโ€ or purposely replay traumatic experiences.

How does ART work?
A client shows up to the session with a topic or "scene" to work on, they identify emotions associated with the scene.
Using side-to-side eye movements, the client is able to relax as the movements trigger polyvagal stimulations. This movement is similar to REM sleep.
The client will again perform eye movements while picturing a scene, but this time a positive, relaxing image is layered on top. This can be a shower of praise or a rewriting of something that has happened in the past.
Eventually, the client experiences disconnection from negative emotions and sensations and will now remember a new "positive" scene.

ART can be used for

Veterans have a difficult time transitioning back to civilian life after war. Vets suffering with anxiety, depression, and PTSD have found limited treatment options through the VA.

"Josh was having constant flashbacks and recurring nightmares, and just when he thought he couldn't go on, a fellow ranger called, telling him about the Warrior Wellness Program, a five-day retreat focused specifically on helping veterans with trauma from battle.
"He told me it was life-changing and how well he was doing. Obviously, I was thrilled for him, but I was skeptical," Josh admitted.
But desperate to try anything, Josh agreed to go. By day two of the Accelerated Wellness Program, he felt alive again.
"That weight that had been sitting on my chest for the past month of panic attacks and anxiety, and I'm having a heart attack, and I can't breathe? I need to go to the hospital, go to the ER? That weight that was on my chest? Gone!" he explained with relief.
So what's the secret? Accelerated Resolution Therapy or ART."

What a great tool for those of you who enjoy and utilize the "5 Things Grounding Technique;" this oil can be used to help ground you via scent. What other tools do you use for which senses? I'm a fan of a soft scarf

Did you know one of the tactics you can utilize to self sooth during panic attacks are tactile grounding techniques? ๐Ÿค”

These are techniques that bring our bodies back to the current reality. Actions like counting while touching your fingers together, looking for items in the room of certain colors, or applying a scent and taking long, deliberate inhale.๐Ÿ˜Œ

Aromas activate our olfactory system, a more primal system. In this way, we can take the focus away from the higher level processing that can ramp up anxiety.

Before herbalism work, I was a mental health counselor. And this is a tactic Iโ€™d recommend often (and use myself!) with success. And now that I have the capacity to MAKE a high quality product for this purpose, I knew I had to! ๐ŸŒฟโœจ

๐Ž๐ฎ๐ญ๐ฌ๐ข๐๐ž ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐‘๐š๐ข๐ง is an aromatherapy roller crafted for this purpose. Oil dual infused with both whole plants and choice essential oils yields a more sustainable & potent offering while discrete and attractive packaging makes use easy.

In a sympathetic state, also known as "fight or flight" our body feels as though it is in danger. Fast, shallow breaths are needed to provide quick oxygen to the muscles in preparation of a response. Throughout the day, if we are nervous, stressed, anxious or triggered by an event, our body involuntarily enters this state.
When we are in a parasympathetic, or rest and digest state, our breathing slows and deepens. Allowing relaxation.

Focusing on slow, controlled breaths allows the body to "reverse engineer" a state of relaxation. We signal to the brain that there is no imminent state of danger.

You may practice box breathing to bring awareness into the body and focus yourself in the present moment.

Breathe in for a count of 4
Hold for a count of 4
breathe out for a count of 4
hold out for a count of 4

You may practice this cycle several times till you notice you have returned to a greater sense of calm and relaxation.

Additionally, If you find that you are often experiencing mental health troubles around anxiety, depression or trauma, reach out to an ART-trained therapist. Visit the link in our bio.

A tried-and-true IEP hackโ€ฆ

You donโ€™t have to be an expert at the IEP table. Most of the people sitting around that table arenโ€™t experts either. ๐Ÿ’ฏ

If something doesnโ€™t feel right, it probably isnโ€™t right. But itโ€™s not up to YOU to know all-of-the-things.

If you donโ€™t understand what theyโ€™re saying, or they start using acronyms you arenโ€™t familiar with, or you feel pressured into agreeing with something, or they start describing your child with words you would never useโ€ฆ

Ask for clarification! And then ask for more clarification.

Seriously, youโ€™ll be surprised how effective this is. If nothing else, it will slow things down when you feel rushed. ๐Ÿ’œ
