This summer, the Leonardtown Volunteer Rescue Squad retired the last of its International chassis ambulances after reaching its end of service life. Normally, a retired ambulance is placed for sale and gets a new life as a mechanic’s vehicle, a camper, or in a more rural, low call volume station. The membership decided to go a different route this time around. A few of our members have strong ties to North Carolina and the areas most damaged by the hurricane that came through last year. The idea to donate was suggested and a vote was cast and accepted that Ambulance 198 would be offered the organizations in or supporting relief efforts to that area. The word was put out and our executive leadership waited for responses from interested parties. Within 30 minutes, Tyler Poling, Vice President of a nonprofit emergency response group known as The Rescue Squad showed an interest.
The Rescue Squad was created by former United Cajun Navy of the Carolinas personnel to be a more agile, forward deployed emergency response organization. They respond to emergencies within hours, not days, across the mid-Atlantic and south eastern states. They are a registered non-profit and have an established history of serving areas most in need of help.
Delivery of A198 was made this July after being stripped of its classic Leonardtown orange and blue decals, immediately got its check up from the mechanic, and started preparations for its new purpose as a mobile command center. In the coming weeks, the temporary magnets with their logo will be replaced with a custom wrap and the inside will be fitted for its missions.
We would like to offer our sincerest appreciation to The Rescue Squad for giving our apparatus a new home, a new life, and a new opportunity to keep helping people across the region. We trust it in your care and look forward to seeing more updates as it takes on its new mission
