Speaking to and sharing my lived experiences with mental illness with the community; Allowing others the freedom and space to be vulnerable; Demonstrating and practicing active listening and allowing others to finally be heard; Being kind and empathic; Praying with and for each other!!

Educating our black and brown communities and advocating for an end to the stigma by practicing these basic skills have been the most fulfilling and gratifying actions during my own journey towards healing and a healthy mental life!

Battling your mind while also having to put on an “im okay” front is the hardest thing to ever do. You are not alone, I’ve been there. You’re so much stronger than you think.

Today, I attended my first NAMIGC Annual Meeting! It was such an honor to hear our keynote speaker Matthew Cordle of Because I said I would. , share his story! I was touched by the vision and mission of this social movement to model the importance and impact that promises have on a person's life and those around them.

My promise and commitment to myself and my family is this...

I will CONTINUE to be accountable for my choices and mistakes, share my story, and DO THE WORK!!
... because I said I would.

Thank you Matt!! Your story, your transparency, your message is greatly appreciated!

I have acknowledged, accepted, but not forgiven nor forgotten! ANY and EVERYTHING I've experienced, good or bad, has molded me into the imperfectly perfect woman I am! I am working to turn my pain into purpose; on purpose... WITH purpose!!

Now that I'm coming to know this new version of ME....I am doing it authentically and unapologetically! I can only be me!

🌼 Gentle reminders for all of our trauma survivors out there - your experiences are real and valid; if it hurts, it hurts.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌼 While it’s important to know that everything hurtful *isn’t* automatically ”trauma”, it’s also good to remember that trauma is a deeply personal thing - something can be deeply traumatic and life-shattering for one person while not having a huge impact for someone else. Both of these experiences are real and valid.

🌼 If you feel like you’re struggling with trauma, working with an experienced trauma therapist can be incredibly helpful.

Yesterday, I woke up to this message from a friend who has been watching my journey. I'd seen them the night before and had the opportunity to chat a bit about the challenges we both have been facing with our mental health.

The message read:

"Remember there is a light at the END of the tunnel! Transformation looks GOOD on you!"

I never thought I'd EVER see the light!! I felt like I kept getting it wrong, but really, it just took a while for me to really understand myself and how my illness effected (and still effects) me and those around me!

But, after recently celebrating my birthday, I realized just how much work I've done and how much I have "changed"! I'M STILL HERE!! There were times I was really stuck in that rabbit hole!! It's dark down there; and so were my thoughts!

I am grateful that today I can say I AM a different person! I've remained committed to doing the work; therapy, support groups, church, social events & small crowds.... I'm back to doing many of the things I enjoyed BEFORE . But now, with clearer boundaries!

I'm certainly not finished but it means a lot when people notice. I am who I am and that's all I can be! Authentically and unapologetically ME!!

Thank you Friend!
