✨ Team Member Tuesday: Meet Tayler ✨
Get to know Tayler Hiser — PRSS & Case Manager with Robert C. Byrd Clinic SHINE recovery services — and the heart behind her work in addiction medicine.
🔷 What inspired you to work in addiction medicine?
"Addiction has touched every part of my life. I grew up watching family members battle it. I saw friends get pulled in, and eventually, I struggled as well. It stole so many beautiful people and almost took my future. I began working in recovery while I was newly sober — before I fully understood it all — because I simply wanted to help. As I learned and grew in this field, it quietly healed parts of me I wasn’t ready to admit were broken. Now, over five years sober, being a PRSS working in addiction medicine has given me my future back."
🔷 What has this field taught you about resilience?
"Every day we work with patients who are fighting — fighting to stay sober, fighting to build a life that works for them in recovery, fighting to see themselves in a positive light. What I’ve learned is that it isn’t about being the strongest person in the room; it’s about being willing to keep going. The biggest impact often comes from the person who simply refuses to quit."
🔷 What keeps you motivated on your most challenging days?
"Personally, my family motivates me. My husband and our two boys lift me up every single day. 🥰 Professionally, it’s the wins — another day sober, a rekindled relationship, a first job in recovery, a place to call their own. We have the incredible privilege of walking with our patients and celebrating each victory alongside them."
🔷 How do you reduce stigma in your work and daily life?
"At work, I advocate fiercely for our patients and their treatment choices. I will gladly be the one who speaks up when their needs aren’t being heard. In my daily life, I share my story and my experiences as a PRSS to broaden understanding of substance use and recovery. The more we talk about it honestly, the less power stigma holds."
🔷 What makes this workplace special in the addiction medicine space?
“We’re a small team of deeply dedicated people who were called to this work — through personal, family, or professional experience. We’re here for the right reasons. Eight hearts. One purpose.” 🖤
