What is a community acupuncture clinic?

A barebone explanation of a community acupuncture clinic is a low-cost, high volume model of providing acupuncture that allows for increased access to treatment.

More specifically, it’s a conscious shift away from the model that is taught in most graduate programs, which focuses heavily on insurance reimbursement, extensive intakes, and private treatment rooms.

Community clinics allow for acupuncture to be accessed by a wide range of people. It gives people a chance to try acupuncture and assess whether they find it helpful without breaking the bank. The model also hinges on the idea that people do not need a white coat to explain to them how to use it. It puts agency and choice-making into the hands of the person receiving treatment and trusts that they know what they need. The goal is to offer people as much acupuncture as they want in support of whatever goals they have, so they can use it in whatever way works best for them.

Treating people for less than market rates should not be read as a charitable endeavor. Though many community acupuncture clinics are 501c3 nonprofits, the majority of community clinics do not have a stream of charitable income, and instead are financially self-sustaining.

Community acupuncture is a solidarity model, not a charity model.

Today's newsletter, cut and pasted here in case you didn't see it:

If you're a Mainer, I'm sure you're saying goodbye to Humid n' Hot Summer while preparing for Dry n' Crispy Autumn. It's an odd time, transitioning from peaches to pumpkins. However you navigate this transition, a quick word to the wise: Don't put your Crocs away just yet. They're still cool to wear with Nike socks, according to my daughter. ;)

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this seasonal-straddle is understood according to five elements, and right now the Earth element is transforming into the Metal element. The good news is that this means we should cover our necks with scarves when the temps drop, fill roasting pans with root veggies, and sip warm cider by an outdoor fire with a gaggle of good friends. Go pick some McIntosh apples!

Clinically-speaking, as everything starts to crisp up and get autumnal AF, a lot of patients come for help with sinuses and/or lungs. Got an annoying, dry cough? Painful sinuses? Allergies? Flares of skin issues? Sudden spikes of anxiety? Dandruff? A general "brittle" feeling in spirit or body? Come on in!

On a more solemn note, this is also the season of Grief. For summer's waving fields of sulfur-bright goldenrod to stiffen and turn amber. For replacing the petunias with the mums. For letting go.

And for shaking our heads because "letting go" is much easier said than done.

So, here's a pumpkin-spiced reminder that we can help Earth transform into Metal with more smoothness, less clunk.

You can find the link for easy online scheduling in the comments.

In service and gratitude,

Lauren & Sacha
