Today is bittersweet. It's bitter because after 3 years of serving our community we have decided to pass the proverbial reigns over to The Church of Safe Injection to pick up the services we formally offered. The drop in center, meetings thar are currently happening will all continue to happen. We feel super confident thar COSI will bring more services and community engagement to Lewiston. They are a great organization with tremendously valuable services. We will keep this page open till the end of the week for any questions after that please direct any questions to COSI via messenger!! Their services will begin this month. Thank you for the opportunity to serve the Lewiston Auburn recovery community.

We’re often asked, “How did the REST Center start??”
It was started out of necessity, by a member of our community that we all know and love.
This is the founder’s story.
Jeremy Hiltz started the REST Center out of a need he identified in the community. In 2007 Jeremy was released from incarceration after being in and out for several years. When he began to rebuild his life he had limited resources, no vehicle, gainful employment, or supports. Due to his lack of resources, he was residing with his mother. She would drop him off in Lewiston, everyday at 6:00 am, to look for work. During those times, when he had no where to go during the day, he would often make his way to the 12 Hour Club on Lisbon Street. During this time, he attended 12-step meetings there and began to find support in his life from the recovery community. The 12 Hour Club gave him a start and a place to be while he was rebuilding his life. Many years later Jeremy ended up going to school and getting into the addiction treatment field. He worked in the local area facilitating different Intensive Outpatient Programs. Jeremy then decided to open his own agency, Recovery Connections of Maine, which is located above The R.E.S.T Center.
The space that is currently occupied by the R.E.S.T Center became available in the summer of 2019. Jeremy would walk by it daily and imagine the possibilities. He remembered what it was like not having anywhere to be, the struggle of trying to do the right thing day after day, and how having a safe place to work on his recovery kept him from going back to prison. He decided to take action. He also took it a step further by providing a computer lab to help people find work. Jeremy began to assemble a board of directors and eventually hired an Executive Director.
Jeremy is constantly wondering what other great things will happen as people continue to come together to help build this community!
Here at the REST Center, we believe everyone deserves a second chance because we’ve seen, time and time again, the incredible things that people, just like Jeremy, are capable of when they have resources and supports available to them.
Together, we will continue to provide a safe recovery space for every member of our community.
