Joshy in Big Sky Country

Joshy in Big Sky Country There is no cure and no standard course of treatment. His family will continue to fulfill his "Big Sky Bucket List" in his honor.

Joshy in Big Sky Country was created to chronicle the life and adventures of Joshy, a 17-year-old diagnosed with a rare and terminal neurodegenerative disorder and moderate intellectual disability, as he explored his new home state of Montana. In 2015, Joshy was diagnosed with idiopathic Neurodegeneration with Brain Iron Accumulation (NBIA), a rare, inherited neurological movement disorder characterized by an abnormal accumulation of iron in the brain, which causes progressive degeneration of the nervous system. Since then, Joshy has had a g-tube placement, a complete spinal fusion to correct a 90-degree lordosis, and a baclofen pump inserted to control spasticity and dystonia. He lost the ability to walk, and pain and weakness characterize his daily life, although it never seems to diminish his smile. Born and raised in Colorado, Joshy and his family set on a new course with a move to Montana to be near family and spend the rest of his days meeting new people and crossing off adventures from his "Big Sky Bucket List."

Our Joshy tree

Hello, everyone! I apologize for the sporadic posts. I had every intention of updating this page, especially as we continued to cross off items from Joshy's "Big Sky Bucket List."

Unfortunately, I've struggled to do so. We made two short trips this past summer: Helena and Great Falls. I have yet to be able to write about them or write blog posts about Joshy. I'm not there yet. Writing is still difficult for me.

I'm not sure the direction I want to take this page. I'm sure it will come in time. Please continue to keep our family in your prayers. We are struggling on many fronts.

If you'd like, we'd love to once again receive Christmas cards in memory of Joshy. Christmas was his favorite holiday, and I want to keep his legacy alive. I'm sure each card will bring joy to my family.

You can send one to:

Thank you so much for your support. God bless you this season and always!

“I do live expecting great things in the life that is ripening for me and all mine—when we shall have all the universe for our own, and be good merry helpful children in the great house of our father…When we are all just as loving and unselfish as Jesus; when like him, our one thought of delight is that God is, and is what he is…then, darling, you and I and all will have grand liberty wherewith Christ makes free—opening his hand to send us out like white doves to range the universe.” —George MacDonald, in a letter to his dying daughter

LORD willing, this month kicks off our family picking up where we left off on Joshy's "Big Sky Bucket List." I will be chronicling our adventures on my blog at clstansberry.com (and posting the link here).

It is my dream to write and share Joshy's story, and as I learn about the art of crafting a memoir, I will also be sharing a little in my blog posts. So please continue sharing with me how Joshy's story (or his smile!) has touched your life.

If you'd like, also feel free to write me at

I'd love to receive letters, pictures, favorite quotes, poems, etc. Consider it part of a project I have in mind. 😁

Thank you to everyone who has followed his story, prayed for him and our family, and helped make his last Christmas special. I appreciate it so much.

You continue to warm our hearts and touch our lives.
