Gestalt language processing is one of two ways children develop language. This is a natural way of developing language and communication. It isn’t a disorder or a diagnosis. Read to understand if a child is a late talker or a gestalt language processor…
Some children develop language with a big inventory of single words and when they are about two years old, they start making 2-3 word phrases.
Other children, like the child in this video, are phrase-based language learners. They develop language through an inventory of language chunks/phrases. While they may say a few single words, they can more easily sing along to songs, imitate phrases with rich intonation, and can be caught speaking gibberish or jargon babbling. But, if you listen close, like in this video, that gibberish or babbling is actually intentional and meaningful communication.
In this video, the child is singing the intonation of the alphabet song. If you weren’t paying attention, you could easily just mistake it for unintentional babbling.
Children whose communication efforts are not understood or validated can become delayed because their brain is not getting the proper reinforcement that they way they understand language and communicate is being understood. These kids will brilliantly start utilizing other communication methods, pointing, gesturing, crying, grunting, independently problem solving and getting things for themselves.
When you understand that your child is a GLP, you can support their brain’s way of developing language and communication.
If your child seems similar in their language development style, you are not alone and your child is not broken!!
