In honor of mental health awareness month, I’m starting a “Break the Stigma” series to stir up and change the way that society looks and talks about mental health. Today, let’s change the conversation around therapy. I want you to throw away any definitions or perceptions of what you think therapy is and see it from a different perspective.
✨We so often believe that therapy is just a place to deal with trauma, loss, heartbreak, grief, etc. but it’s not. It’s not only a place for healing but for growth in every aspect of your life. I cannot reiterate this enough: IT IS A SAFE PLACE !!
✨The simple fact is: therapy’s is most effective when you’re working with a therapist who’s a good fit for you. Don’t ever settle for less than what you know you need/deserve.
✨Even with a therapist, your support system will still be there for you. Lean on them for the personal and intimate support and connection that your therapist cannot give you.
✨Going to therapy takes strength, not for any other reason than that you’re actively choosing to be vulnerable, transparent, and honest about your struggles; and then taking the actions to become a better you. That’s strength, not weakness.
✨There is no timeline. You are not obligated to stay in therapy longer than you feel like you need it or want it. It is voluntary and your choice.
✨I can go on and on about this one but I’ll just say this for now - therapy isn’t a sin, use the resources that God has provided for you. It is a strategy that can aid in your growth and healing. Faith and mental health can coexist.
A lot of these myths I believed myself but after experiencing it, my whole mindset changed. Therapy helped save my life, because I allowed it to. What’s stopping you?
