Today we have a calm, non-dramatic expression. Ideally when we express meibomian glands we want the oils to softly release and be in a more liquefied state. We don’t want to see stringy expression (although it is more entertaining to watch). Remember your glands need to be able to release oil upon normal blinks, so if your oils have hardened, then you certainly wont express oil upon blinking.

Warm compresses can aid in melting some of the oils at the gland openings behind your lashes. If you have more extensive blockages, you may need other therapies such as in office thermal or light therapies. Some examples would be RadioFrequency treatments, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT)

Having a proper dry eye exam can give you direction on how to best manage your dry eye!

Itch eyes can be quite annoying! We’ve all dealt with it at some point. Even though we do not recommend rubbing your eyes, sometimes it can be hard to resist when you need to satisfy the itch!

There are many causes to itchy eyes, but the 2 biggest culprits are allergies and dry eyes! But did you know of those 2, the biggest culprit is actually dry eyes!

So the question is, if you rub your eyes from them being itchy, do they itch even more after? Or do they feel better after? Let’s see how allergies and dry eyes play a role in itchy eyes:

Allergies: when you’re exposed to an allergen, your body wants to fight it off as quickly as possible. This causes mast cells to release histamines! These chemicals cause itching, swelling, redness and inflammation. The point of this is to give quicker access of immune cells to the allergen. When you rub your eyes, this causes more histamine release, furthering this cascade and making your eyes more itchy.

Dry eyes: When your eyes are dry, they will itch as well! Much like if you have dry skin, it can become itchy. The main cause of dry eye now days is blocked and clogged meibomian glands. These are oil-filled glands in the eyelids. Since we unconsciously blink less often and more incompletely than we should, these glands are no longer stimulated. The body can generate itching reflexes to get you to rub the glands in hopes of stimulating them. If those glands released oil, then you will typically feel better after rubbing.

It’s always best to consult with your eye doctor if you have consistent itchy eyes. They can properly test to see what the underlying issue is!

Here’s a case of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), a form of dry eye. The meibomian glands are oil filled glands shown as white linear strands on the inner tissue of the eyelid. The camera uses an infrared light to image the lipids contained within the glands. Meibomian glands are not visible with traditional light/viewing.

In this case, 2 radiofrequency treatments were administered 3 weeks apart. A follow up to re-image the glands was done 4 weeks post the last treatment. There is a significant increase in gland length and brightness, showing that the glands have been unblocked/unclogged and repaired.
