We’re excited to share that Saint Joseph Health – Sleep Care Center in Lexington has welcomed Donna Crockett, MSN, APRN, NP-C, to its team. She has worked in nursing since 2010, including her tenure with Saint Joseph East since 2012, where she has served the emergency department, surgery department and sleep medicine department.

“While I've worked in various nursing settings, my focus for the past eight years has been in
sleep medicine. Through this work, I've come to understand the critical importance of sleep to overall health, and my love for sleep medicine has grown immensely. From the onset of my nurse practitioner journey, I knew I wanted to remain in this specialized field – it's very rewarding, and I've found my passion.”

Welcome to the team, Donna!

This , we’re reminding women in Kentucky about the importance of early detection and knowing your risk for breast cancer. Thanks to mammography and genetic counseling, breast cancer can often be detected in its earliest stages when it is most treatable.

Last week, Dr. Jessica Croley with Saint Joseph Health – Cancer Center in Lexington joined WKYT mid-morning show hosts Destiny Quinn and Victor Puente to talk about breast cancer awareness and our Yes, Mamm! program, which provides free mammograms to uninsured and underinsured Kentuckians. Watch the segment below and call our HOPE line at (859) 313-4673 to learn more about our oncology services.

Flu season is no fun, but a flu shot can fix that. Get your flu vaccine sooner than later – viruses begin circulating in the fall and vaccines can take up to two weeks to build protective antibodies. Even after vaccinating, wash your hands frequently, cover coughs and sneezes and stay home when sick to help limit the spread.

Sonja McCarty puts the numbers together with the people. The 27 year Saint Joseph veteran, based at Saint Joseph Medical Group – Orthopedics in Mount Sterling, travels among other Saint Joseph orthopedic clinics, from Lexington, Lebanon, Corbin and points in between.

Under her purview as clinic administrator of Saint Joseph Medical Group’s orthopedic line, patient experience metrics increased and critical goals were met—both significant factors in her being named the 2024 Leader of the Year for both Saint Joseph Medical Group and the Saint Joseph Health/CommonSpirit Kentucky ministry overall.

But to Sonja, those numbers simply mean this: “It’s supporting the managers in their roles so that they can support the caregivers to provide the best care to our patients.”

The key, Sonja said, is that everyone has a voice in the Saint Joseph ministry. “... I think when you let everybody have that voice, it really makes an impact and a difference,” she said. “And I think our organization allows that and encourages that.”

While it’s important for men to receive regular health and wellness checkups to test for heart disease, cancers and other common risk factors, they must also check in on their mental health. An estimated one in 10 men experience depression or anxiety, but less than half seek treatment, according to a survey conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. If you’re experiencing any signs of mental illnesses, inform your primary care provider.

Regina Masters, DNP, experienced some of the toughest challenges in her 10-year tenure as director of nursing for Continuing Care Hospital last year. Despite the challenges, Regina says she was humbled and blessed to be recognized as the Continuing Care Hospital Leader of the Year award recipient in 2021.

“I always try to remember my purpose and what I’m here for,” Regina said. “I am here to support the staff caring for the patients, and that includes staffing, supplies and ensuring smooth processes. I also talk to the staff about our purpose. I try to remind them that we’re here for a purpose, to serve the patients and the community and to do the best we can.”

Doing the best she can do has taken Regina far in her 30-year nursing career. She became a nurse in 1988, following in her mother’s footsteps, and has served more than 20 years at CHI Saint Joseph Health - Saint Joseph East in various leadership roles. Nursing supervisor Chelsey Reams, RN, has a goal to make the best of a patient’s long-term stay at Continuing Care Hospital.

“When I come in, my 12-hour shift goes to the patients,” Chelsey said. “Many patients haven’t been able to have visitors or their family lives far away and aren’t able to come see them while they’re here for six weeks, so I try to do little things, like wear cheetah print scrubs on the weekends with matching masks or bedazzled headbands.“

Chelsey worked at Continuing Care Hospital for six years before becoming a travel nurse. While she enjoyed her role as a travel nurse, she returned to Continuing Care Hospital and moved into a new position last year – she says she felt called to return home.
