What Is “Heavy Work”—and Why Does It Help?⭐

💪🏼Heavy work isn’t about lifting weights, it’s any activity that pushes or pulls against resistance, like climbing, carrying, squeezing, or stomping. 🚶‍♂️

🤓These movements activate deep muscle and joint input (called proprioception), which helps calm the nervous system and organize the brain and body.

😣For kids, heavy work can be a powerful tool for emotional regulation. It helps them feel grounded, focused, and more in control—especially during transitions, meltdowns, or moments of overwhelm.

✋ Just a few minutes of heavy work can make a big difference. Think of it as a reset button for the body and brain!

Who says you can’t play with your food? 🥦🍓

During feeding therapy, exploring food in creative ways helps children feel more comfortable trying new textures and tastes. We love seeing little artists at work (and play)!

👾 OT Trick: Monster Movement Cards Made Easy!
🧟‍♂️ Monster movement cards are a playful way to build motor planning, coordination, and body awareness, but every kiddo is different! Try these simple OT adaptations:

🧠 Use simpler actions like “freeze like someone who is scared" or "reach like a bat"
🎨 Demonstrate the movements for kids who benefit from visual cues
🐢 Slow down the pace and provide physical support during the movement for kids who need extra processing time
🤲 Let kids choose their favorite card to boost engagement and autonomy
⭐Let kids create their own cards for executive functioning and autonomy
👯 Pair with music or a partner for added rhythm and social interaction

🔨 OT Trick: Pumpkin Hammering Made Easy! 🎃 Pumpkin hammering is a festive way to build hand strength, coordination, and motor planning, but every kiddo is different! Try these simple OT adaptations:

🧤 Use larger golf tees or pegs for easier manipulation
🎯 Pre-start holes to reduce resistance for kids with lower strength
🔨 Avoid the hammer by using pre-drilled holes and allowing children to place pegs with fingers
🤲 Let kids use both hands or a soft mallet for better control
👀 Draw target dots to support visual-motor integration
🪑 Stabilize the pumpkin in a tray or on a towel to prevent rolling

🧙 OT Trick: Sensory Cauldron Made Easy! 🎃 Sensory cauldrons are a spooky-fun way to build fine motor skills, sensory regulation, and imaginative play, but every kiddo is different! Try these simple OT adaptations:

🧤 Use tools like tongs or spoons for kids who avoid direct touch
🎃 Swap slime or spaghetti for dry fillers like rice or beans
👀 Add sorting tasks to boost focus and engagement
🤲 Offer hand-over-hand support or let kids scoop with both hands
🔍 Hide small objects to encourage listing by using verbal descriptions for what to find. For example, "it has 8 legs, and it is black".
🍁Don't like cauldrons- try crunchy leaves or dry corn in a plastic bowl instead

🍁OT Trick: Leaf Jumping Made Easy! 🍁 Leaf “stepping stones” are a fun way to build balance and coordination, but every kiddo is different! Try these simple OT adaptations:

🦶 Use larger, non-slip leaves for more stability; think foam or felt material
👣Add arrows or footprints to guide movement - opt for a straight path to start then upgrade to zig-zags; this can be done using sidewalk chalk or paper arrows
🐢 Swap tricky moves like “spin” for gentler ones like “step slowly” or "touch your toes"
🤲 Let kids hold your hand or use a wall or rail for balance
✋Incorporate calming cues like deep breathing between jumps or a “rest leaf” to pause and reset.
🎯 Place small objects on leaves to add a reaching/bending challenge

Fall play should be fun and accessible for all kiddos!

🍁✂️ OT "TRICKS" for Hole Punching️🍁 Hole punch crafts are awesome for building hand strength and bilateral coordination. But they can be tough for little hands! Here are some OT-approved tricks to make them easier:

🎃 Use an Easy-Squeeze Punch: Look for soft-grip or spring-loaded models that require less force.

🧠 Tape It Down: Secure the punch to the table so kids can focus on squeezing without juggling both hands.

🍂 Start with Thin Materials: Paper or foam leaves are easier to punch than real ones, work up to thicker textures!

👀 Add Visual Targets: Draw dots where kids should punch to boost eye-hand coordination and planning.

🤲 Try Two-Handed Support: Let kids use both hands to squeeze or guide their hands for extra help.
