It's National Burn Awareness Week. Here are some tips from National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

Burn injuries don’t just happen at work; they can happen at home, too. Scald injuries can affect anyone at any age, and children, older adults, and people with disabilities are especially at risk.

Hot bath water, coffee, tea, and even microwaved soup can cause serious, life-changing injuries. Scalds are the second leading cause of burn injuries.

Following guidance from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), simple steps like testing bath water, keeping hot drinks out of reach, letting food cool before eating, and turning pot handles inward can help prevent injuries.

If you lose power during the winter storm and are using a portable generator, run it outside at least 20 feet away from your home. Carbon monoxide deaths spike during power outages.

Never run a generator indoors. One portable generator can produce as much carbon monoxide as hundreds of cars. There is not enough ventilation in your garage - even with the big door open.

Carbon monoxide or CO is a colorless and odorless gas. CO poisoning can occur when a fuel-burning appliance or machine, such as a furnace, heater or generator, is not working or vented properly. Breathing in CO at high levels can be fatal. By installing carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home and by following a few simple steps, you can reduce your risk of CO poisoning. Don't forget: Your child's car seat or booster seat also has a shelf life! We know that life is busy and those expiration dates can slip our minds, so consider this a friendly reminder to check those expiration dates. Find the expiration date, usually on the date of manufacture sticker on the bottom or back of the car seat or stamped on the plastic shell. While you have the seat out, you can snap a photo of the label or pop the expiration date reminder into your favorite calendar app.
