Congratulations to the recipient of the 2025 Stephanie Husen Exemplary Character Award, Renea Crase, RN! This is a tremendous honor and a testament to Renea’s dedication and compassion for her orthopedics patients at Prisma Health Laurens County Hospital.

This award carries special meaning, as it honors the legacy of Dr. Stephanie Husen. Dr. Husen completed her residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital and completed her fellowship in Sports Medicine with Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas. Tragically, Dr. Husen was one of the four victims of the 2022 mass shooting at the Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Dr. Husen is remembered for her generous spirit and unwavering dedication to her patients.

Congratulations Renea on this well-deserved recognition!

Prisma Health Children’s Hospital in Greenville opened its new, expanded pediatric cancer and blood disorders unit on Tuesday, Aug. 12 thanks to overwhelming support from local groups and generous community members, the nationally recognized nonprofit Hogs for the Cause and the South Carolina state legislature.

The $7.5 million space is named the Prisma Health Children’s Hospital—Upstate Hogs for the Cause Pediatric Hematology Oncology Unit. Hogs for the Cause is a New Orleans-based nonprofit organization that has ties to South Carolina and is dedicated to supporting families affected by pediatric brain cancer.

This state-of-the-art unit will provide care for children and adolescents with cancer and blood disorders. Tailored with invaluable family input, this new 7,580 sq ft expansion features bright and comforting spaces—nine inpatient rooms, work desks for parents, a dedicated respite room, an expanded playroom, and an end‑of‑life suite to support families during the most challenging times.

“I’m thrilled that we can take this next leap forward by creating a space that is literally custom built for and by families,” said Dr. Aniket Saha, the unit’s medical director. “Every part of this unit was purpose-built to bring comfort, hope and healing to children and their families. This thoughtfully designed space will better blend family care with clinical care, helping reduce stress and offering a positive healing environment that nourishes the mind, body and soul.”

Named in honor of generous support from Hogs for the Cause, this child‑centered healing space brings world‑class care and compassion to kids in the Upstate. https://bit.ly/4lm7kCD

A small act of compassion can make a big difference. When Melanie Hudson, RN, noticed that patients discharged with Foley catheters after prostate procedures felt anxious about going out in public, she took action. Using one of the disposable padding covers from the OR, she created a pattern for cloth bags with a cinch to disguise the bag.

“I made a couple of prototypes before I figured out what was quickest and easiest,” she said. She cleared it with urologist Tim Large, MD, who thought it was a great idea.

“The patients love them,” said Stephanie Gass, Assistant OR Nurse Manager. “This has the potential to greatly impact the patient experience, and we are so grateful to have a team member who continuously provides compassionate care. Melanie’s acts of kindness inspire her patients and fellow team members.”
