With increased travel, holiday parties, and holiday stress at a time of more dangerous road conditions, December is a fitting time to raise awareness about the dangers of drunk driving. This campaign seeks to encourage everyone to responsibly and consciously think out situations where drinking alcohol may occur and make wise decisions.

We also encourage anyone struggling with alcohol to seek help, and for family members of those struggling to lend them support. If you or a loved one is struggling with alcohol, give us a call. Our team is happy to answer any questions you might have and help you understand all of your options.

The last couple of weeks, we looked at CBT and DBT, two evidence-based therapies that are reliable methods integrated into our addiction treatment. This week, we're highlighting the differences while demonstrating they are both effective in treating the underlying causes of addiction. Using both allows for a more comprehensive approach to addiction treatment.

When these two are used with other therapy methods like group therapy, family therapy, and holistic therapy, individuals can feel confident that healing for the whole person is the goal they're working towards.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a highly effective method in addiction treatment. DBT goes deep into the emotional aspects of our struggles while holding two seemingly opposing things—true acceptance of where we're at and aiming towards something greater—in harmony.

The person you care about who has needed help has finally began their recovery journey. In some ways, it may feel like the hardest part has just begun, but keeping these three things in mind can help you both go the distance.

Connection is the biggest key. Intentionally listening and affirming what they're going through is difficult builds trust. Listening often goes much further than unsolicited advice, too. Remember that this is a long process. The factors that fueled the addiction are complex; it takes time to heal. In the meantime, celebrate the milestones--even the smallest ones. When and if possible, embark on some adventurous activities, big or small, that build relational connection and create great memories.

The beautiful thing about supporting someone in addiction treatment is that your care for them will be like a jetpack to them. What's more, we experience the truth that being a gift to others is an incredible gift we can give ourselves.
