❄️⚡ Winter Storms & Power Outages: Protect Your “Fridge Meds”! ⚡❄️

Helpful tips from your local independent pharmacy 💙

Power outages during winter storms can be stressful — especially if you take medications that usually need refrigeration. Here’s what you should know to stay safe and prepared:

💊 Medications That Often Need Refrigeration

Examples include:

Insulin

Injectable diabetes meds (GLP-1s)

Biologics & specialty medications

Certain eye drops

👉 Not all medications have the same rules — always check the label or ask us!

🧊 Important Insulin Tip (Big Relief for Many Patients!)

✔️ Many insulins can be kept at room temperature once opened
✔️ Most are good for up to 28 days out of the fridge
✔️ They should be kept below 86°F and away from direct heat or sunlight

⚠️ BUT: Not all insulins are the same — some have different time limits.
📞 Always confirm with your pharmacist before assuming it’s safe.

🧊 Before the Storm: Be Prepared

✔️ Set fridge temp to 35–46°F (2–8°C)
✔️ Keep meds in original packaging
✔️ Store meds toward the back of the fridge
✔️ Freeze ice packs or water bottles
✔️ Have a small cooler ready just in case

⚡ During a Power Outage

Keep fridge closed as much as possible

A closed fridge stays cold ~4 hours

If outage lasts longer:

Move meds to a cooler with ice packs

❌ Do NOT let meds freeze

Use a thermometer if available

🚫 What NOT to Do

❌ Don’t guess if a medication is still good
❌ Don’t store meds outside (temps can fluctuate or freeze)
❌ Don’t refreeze meds unless instructed
❌ Don’t throw meds away before checking with us!

🕵️ After Power Is Restored

Ask:

How long was the outage?

Did the medication stay cold?

Did anything freeze or warm up?

📞 Call us before using the medication again.
Many medications (including insulin) may still be safe — but it depends!

💙 Your independent pharmacy is here before, during, and after the storm.

⚡❄️ Power Outage Survival Tips — From Your Local Independent Pharmacy ❄️⚡

Winter storms (and unexpected outages) can be stressful. A little preparation can help keep you, your family, and your medications safe until the lights come back on 💙

🔦 Be Prepared Before the Power Goes Out
✔️ Keep flashlights & extra batteries handy
✔️ Charge phones and backup battery packs
✔️ Know where manual can openers are
✔️ Have blankets and warm clothing easily accessible

💊 Medication Safety Tips
Keep a current list of medications & doses
Store meds in a cool, dry place (away from freezing temps)

For refrigerated meds:
Keep the fridge closed as much as possible

Use a cooler with ice packs if needed
❌ Do NOT let medications freeze
📞 If you’re unsure a medication is still safe — call us before using it

🧊 Food & Water Basics
✔️ Keep fridge/freezer doors closed
✔️ Use food in the fridge first, freezer second
✔️ When in doubt — throw it out
✔️ Keep bottled water available for drinking & meds

🔥 Stay Warm & Safe
❌ Never use grills, camp stoves, or generators indoors
✔️ Use space heaters safely (away from flammable items)
✔️ Close off unused rooms to conserve heat

🩺 Health & Emergency Tips:
Check on elderly neighbors & loved ones
Keep medical devices charged or have a backup plan

Know when to seek help for:
Trouble breathing
Chest pain
Signs of hypothermia

Stay safe. Stay warm.

OTC Cough & Cold Meds for Kids: What Parents Should Know
– from your favorite neighborhood pharmacy

Cold season is here, and we get lots of questions about what’s safe (and what’s not) for kids. Here’s a quick, parent-friendly guide to help you choose wisely:

🚫 First & Most Important: Age Matters

NO cough & cold meds for children under 4 years old (and many experts say avoid under 6).

These meds don’t work well in little ones and can cause serious side effects.

🧾 Always Read the Label (Yes, Every Time!)

Look for the active ingredients, not just the brand name.

Many products contain the same ingredients → doubling up can be dangerous.

Watch closely for acetaminophen (Tylenol) to avoid overdose.

⚠️ Common Ingredients to Know

Acetaminophen – fever/pain (dose by weight!)

Ibuprofen – fever/pain (only if over 6 months)

Dextromethorphan – cough suppressant (often not very effective)

Guaifenesin – loosens mucus (hydration helps it work better)

Antihistamines – may cause drowsiness or hyperactivity

Decongestants (pseudoephedrine/phenylephrine) – can raise heart rate & cause jitteriness

👉 More ingredients ≠ better relief

🍯 Tried & True Non-Drug Tips (Often Work Better!)

Honey (for kids over 1 year): great for cough

Cool-mist humidifier

Saline spray + suction

Fluids & rest

Warm soup or tea (comfort counts!)

🚨 Safety Red Flags – Call the Doctor If You See:

Trouble breathing or wheezing

Fever lasting >3 days

Ear pain

Cough lasting >2 weeks

Child very lethargic or hard to wake

💡 Pro Tips from Your Pharmacist

✔️ Use a proper dosing syringe (not kitchen spoons)
✔️ Dose by weight, not age
✔️ Keep meds locked up & out of reach
✔️ When in doubt—ask us! We love helping ❤️

📍 Stop by or message us before buying—sometimes the safest option is no medication at all, and we’re happy to guide you.
