Our Head and Neck SLPs Arica and Dave spent the morning presenting to Radiation Oncology residents on the role of the SLP in patients undergoing radiation therapy. ☢️ Our clinic values the opportunity to work collaboratively with professionals from various disciplines towards the common goal of better patient outcomes. We’re grateful to Radiation Oncology for the opportunity to spend the morning together! ☕️ 🍩

For the third year in a row, our SLP Haley DeWitt had the opportunity to visit the Vocal Music students at to talk about what it means to be a voice-specialized SLP. Haley was a Vocal Music student at GSA in 2006 and a staff member in 2012 and 2014, so she loves being invited back. The students are always brimming with curiosity and have excellent questions. They enjoyed learning more about SLP voice evaluations and watching several scopes (which always elicits lots of interested sounds and comments). Thanks for the invite, GSA! We can’t wait to come back!

Are you aware of the ways rheumatological conditions can impact swallowing? For example, Sjögren Syndrome causes dry mouth, or xerostomia, which can make it harder to swallow.

June is Dysphagia Awareness Month. It’s a great time to refresh ourselves on the facts. In clinics such as ours, we know dysphagia impacts a great number of patients. Statistics on prevalence vary, but according to info published by the NIH, dysphagia is thought to affect as many as 40% of people over 60. awareness

Our clinician Haley DeWitt, CCC-SLP had the opportunity to lecture on Parkinson’s Disease and Hypokinetic Dysarthria in the CSD Motor Speech Disorders class this morning. After the initial lecture portion, dB meter and pitch tracking apps came in handy as CSD graduate students had fun learning some treatment exercises. Thanks to clinic director/professor Dr. Suiter for the invite!
