Ever wonder how your registered dental hygienist became a hygienist?! Upon admission into an accredited dental hygiene program (2 or 4 year pathways), each student completes about 15 credit hours of classwork a semester, along with hundreds of clinical hours including treating patients, lab work, and rotations at various dental office settings. Classwork includes radiology, pharmacology, local anesthesia, dental nutrition, etc. Prior to receiving your license, students must graduate and pass both national dental hygiene board and state board exams (clinical and written). To continuing practicing as a dental hygienist in the state of Kentucky, you must complete 30 continuing education hours every 2 years. So please be kind to your RDH and remember how hard they are working/have worked to protect your oral health!

Dental Hygiene Month was established by the ADHA (American Dental Hygienists Association) in 2009, to raise awareness about the importance of dental health and celebrate the work dental hygienists do.
