❤️ Today is World AIDS Day. And the truth is this ➡️ the South is still seeing the highest rates of new HIV diagnoses in the country. In rural communities like ours, access to testing, prevention, and affirming care is still limited... and stigma is often the biggest barrier of all.
✊🏽 This reality also falls heaviest on Black and Hispanic communities. In 2022, Black individuals made up 38% of new diagnoses.
🏳️🌈 And gay and bis*xual men (and other MSM) accounted for 67% nationwide.
These numbers represent real people in our towns and hollers.
💊 Testing, PrEP, PEP, education, and community support save lives, but only if they’re available to everyone. Learn more:
❤️ What is PrEP?
Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis: A medicine that can reduce the risk of getting HIV from s*x by about 99%. (and from injection drug use by at least 74%).
‼️ How you can get PrEP:
1) Talk to a healthcare provider you feel safe with.
2) Get tested. You must be HIV negative to get PrEP.
3) Get your prescription filled at your pharmacy.
❤️ What is PEP?
Post-Exposure Prophylaxis: A medicine you can take after being potentially exposed to HIV to prevent infection.
‼️ How you can get PEP:
- Must be started within 72 hours after a possible exposure to HIV.
- Prescribed by emergency rooms, primary healthcare providers, or some s*xual health clinics.
- Know where you can get PEP before you need it.
