Using Art and Writing in Therapy

I have been working in the mental heath field since graduating from James Madison University in 1986. I have been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker since 1994. I have been providing outpatient therapy for the past 18 years, including 9 years at Rockbridge Area Community Services (in Lexington, VA) and 5 years at Piedmont Psychiatric Center (in Lynchburg, VA). I often invite clients to draw, paint, collage or write (such as black out poetry) in session. Using art can help people access and release feelings that they may otherwise have a hard time verbalizing.
