Four of our residents had the opportunity to attend the Rhinology Workshop at Saint Louis University’s Practical Anatomy and Surgical Education (PASE) program. 🩺👃

Led in part by our own Dr. Brett Comer, this hands-on course gave participants the chance to practice and advance their endoscopic sinus surgery skills. A great experience in surgical education and resident growth!
They also had some 📸 photo fun at the zoo 🦩 & a game ⚾️

Head and neck surgeon, Dr. Quinn Dunlap has been working closely with the nursing care teams and UK HealthCare administration to establish a dedicated unit for patients recovering from complex free flap surgeries.

Free flap surgery is a highly specialized reconstructive procedure in which tissue is completely detached from its original location—along with its blood supply—and transferred to another part of the body to restore function or repair defects. The procedure involves microsurgical techniques to reconnect blood vessels at the new site and can take anywhere from 3 to 12 hours or more.

Because success depends on meticulous post-operative monitoring of the flap’s blood supply, having a centralized unit is critical. This specialized care environment ensures patients receive the attention they need during the most crucial period of recovery.

Additionally, keeping these patients on a single unit allows our faculty, residents and inpatient APP, Stephanie, to deliver consistent, timely care without the delays or complications that come from being spread across multiple areas of the healthcare system.

The unit opened on July 21 and we look forward to its continued success and potential expansions for complex Otolaryngology operative cases.

🌟Welcome New Audiologist!! Hannah Sake, AuD-CCC-A🌟

💙Why UK? I had the privilege of completing my externship with UK and absolutely loved the team, the patients, and Lexington itself. I could not pass up the opportunity to stick around and provide hearing healthcare to families in the Commonwealth!
👂 Why Audiology? It is such an amazing opportunity to be able to work with children and help them to enhance their ability to hear as well as communicate with others.
🎉Favorite part of externship? Being able to learn from multiple different providers with differing specialities (and be a part of the best team ever)!
📚 🐾 Hobbies or interests? In my free time, I enjoy reading, going for long walks, and spending time with my dog, Opie (who very much prefers shorter walks, unfortunately).

We are more than delighted that you found your new home with us!

🌟 Extern Spotlight: Taylor McCreary 🌟

🏡 Where are you from? born and raised in Brookville, Indiana
🏫 School: University of Cincinnati for undergrad and graduate school
💙Why UK?: I am excited for the large, fast-paced medical center serving pediatrics and adults and to be a part of the audiology team at UK HealthCare.
👂 why Audiology?: Audiology holds a special place in my heart as my brother, a pediatric cancer survivor, received audiological care due to ototoxicity from chemotherapy at a young age.
🛶 👩🏼‍🍳 Outside of audiology, I enjoy spending time outside with my family and friends, going on walks, boating, and trying out new recipes.

🌟 It’s been a joy to get to have you as a part of our program and anticipate great success in the coming year! 🌟
