Access Lexington

Access Lexington We aim to promote the inclusion and empowerment of people with disabilities in Lexington.

Access Lexington works to make our community more accessible and inclusive for all of our citizens. The Commission does this through Education (created and offers an engaging disability awareness training program), Changing Laws (changed our handicapped parking fine from $15 to $250), Supporting Organizations (supports and encourages several organizations that serve people with disabilities), and Advocating for People with Disabilities (the Commission gives a voice to people that are often unheard and forgotten).

The Bluegrass Council of the Blind is partnering with the UK College of Fine Arts to host a FREE community screening of Telephone—an award-winning dance film created especially with blind and visually impaired audiences in mind. This powerful documentary celebrates the art of Audio Description and invites everyone to experience dance as visceral, not merely visual.
📅 Wednesday, October 15
🕡 6:30–8:45 pm
📍 Farish Theater, Lexington Central Library (140 E. Main St. – accessible entrance, free validated parking in the attached garage)
The evening will feature an exclusive director’s introduction, the full film, and an optional post-show discussion with UK College of Fine Arts faculty. This event is part of a nationwide White Cane Day celebration.

Admission is free, but the experience will be priceless.

For those who attend using Wheels for transportation, reimbursement passes can be requested upon arrival. Blindfolds will be made available for anyone who would like to experience the film through audio description only.

This September 29 – October 5, participate in Lexington's Week Without Driving challenge! In communities across the country, including Lexington, many residents cannot or do not drive due to age, income, ability, or other factors. Week Without Driving is a national initiative that invites drivers to experience the barriers that non drivers in our community face every day, while connecting with others to imagine a future where alternatives to driving are safe, pleasant, and easy for everyone. Participating is simple: if you drive regularly, try to replace as many car trips as you can during the week with other options, and if those options aren't accessible or don't exist, talk to your neighbors and elected officials about it! Learn about events happening during the week and how to get involved at livingstreetslex.org/weekwithoutdriving, and learn about the national movement at weekwithoutdriving.org.

If alternatives to driving, especially public transit, are something you care about, you can also apply for the upcoming Transit Advocacy Academy. Join Living Streets Lexington, Fayette Alliance, and Lextran to learn about public transit in Lexington and strategies for effective advocacy, and connect with other people in Lexington who care about improving transportation options. Applications open September 23. Learn more at livingstreetslex.org/transitadvocacyacademy.

Please read this statement regarding the incident at Hershey Park. Compassion, empathy and awareness are needed when it comes to helping vulnerable children. Also, we echo the gratitude of the Good Samaritan that acted so quickly to save a child.

A moment of crisis calls for compassion.
